On the afternoon of January 6, the My Khe beach area (Da Nang) with nearly 200m of temporary sand dike was completed. In recent days, Da Nang City authorities have mobilized hundreds of people to use sandbags stacked on top of each other, combined with iron cages to create a breakwater to protect the My Khe beach.

My Khe is the most beautiful beach in Da Nang, known as one of the six most attractive beaches on the planet, top 10 most beautiful beaches in Asia. However, in recent times, due to big waves and rising sea levels, My Khe beach has suffered serious erosion, causing many areas of the beach to be eroded by rolling waves, eating deep into the mainland.

The Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Agricultural Works and Rural Development in Da Nang and the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang Tourist Beaches mobilized people and means to overcome and limit landslides. The plan was to use trucks to transport sand from an alluvial land to the landslide area to have reinforcement materials on site. The sand was put into sacks, then placed in iron baskets for fixing.

The above solution is only temporary, landslides and erosion continue to occur and eat deep into the beach in adjacent areas where temporary dikes have been built.

Despite the temporary dike, the waves continue to cause erosion deep inside. According to the management board of Son Tra peninsula and Da Nang tourist beaches, the erosion of My Khe beach is due to the influence of the northeast monsoon, creating a rip current, a strong current flowing from the shore towards the sea. Depending on the weather every year, the location of the rip current changes and causes different levels of erosion.
