On the morning of April 2, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City held a press conference to provide information about the 11th Southern Traditional Cake Festival in 2024, scheduled to be held at Binh Thuy District Square from April 17 to 21 (March 9 to 13 of the lunar calendar).
This year’s festival will have about 200 to 250 booths divided into three groups: traditional cakes, cuisine, OCOP products and regional specialties. The traditional cake products alone are expected to attract about 100 artisans to participate, displaying and introducing about 100 types of cakes.
Many new points
Ms. Dao Thi Thanh Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City, said there are many new features of this year's folk cake festival.
1. The space will be arranged in a way that does not cover the entire festival area, but leaves gaps to create ventilation.
2. Recreating Thuan Hung rice paper village (Thot Not district, Can Tho city), arranging space for artisans to display and demonstrate rice paper making and having a rice paper drying area for visitors to take pictures and check-in.
3. The most special event is the pouring of a "giant" pancake with a diameter of 3m, made by 14 chefs (scheduled to take place on April 18), then the cake will be cut and served for free to visitors who come to visit at that time.
Artist Hong Dung shares about the "biggest" banh xeo ever at the press conference - Photo: CHI QUOC
The biggest pancake
Sharing at the press conference, artisan Hong Dung added that this is a standard Western-style banh xeo. She has participated in many culinary events, but this is the biggest banh xeo she has ever seen.
According to Ms. Dung, because the scale of the banh xeo is so large, if calculated in a circle, it can reach 12 to 14 meters.
"The artisans do not promise to make an excellent cake, but they promise to make the edges crispy and the bottom will have enough flour to fill you up. A true Western-style banh xeo," said Ms. Dung.
According to Ms. Dung, Can Tho is the cradle of the Western pancake. About 10 years ago, Ms. Muoi Xiem made the famous pancake when she competed in the US and won a prize.
This time, the organizers of the Traditional Cake Festival hope to use the event to remind, preserve and promote the image of the Western pancake.
