It is necessary to be careful in including Literature in medical admissions.

Previously, the Medical industry usually only recruited students with a traditional combination of B00 Math, Chemistry, Biology; the Pharmaceutical industry recruited students with the combination of Math, Chemistry, Biology or Math, Physics, Chemistry. To expand the enrollment scope, in recent years, many universities that train in the Medical-Pharmaceutical industry have begun to expand the admission combination, including the combination of foreign languages, Natural Sciences, etc.

This year in particular, some universities such as Van Lang University, Duy Tan University, Vo Truong Toan University and Tan Tao University have recruited medical students with a combination of Literature subjects, which has surprised, worried and troubled the medical community.

Doctor Truong Hong Son, Deputy Secretary General - Vietnam Medical Association affirmed that Literature is important for all fields of study. But in the field of Medicine, the most important are still Natural Science subjects such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and perhaps Foreign Languages.

Regarding the need for communication and behavioral skills of future doctors, Mr. Son said that medical ethics, medical profession, and communication and behavioral issues have been included in the training program.

Meanwhile, Medicine is one of the majors with the heaviest, most elaborate training program and the longest training time. The quality of admission and training process is directly related to the lives of patients. Therefore, a good recruitment plan will be willing to attract excellent students to study Medicine.

“The quality of human resources in the medical industry is directly related to the training capacity of schools, and directly related to the capacity of students. If students' capacity meets and is suitable for the subjects of the major, they will have an advantage. As for Literature, no one says it is not important. But the issue here is the expertise, level, and ability of the learner,” Mr. Son stated his opinion.

Without expressing agreement or opposition to the fact that some universities have included Literature in their medical admission plans, Prof. Nguyen Anh Tri, National Assembly Delegate of Hanoi City and former Director of the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, affirmed that medical training is an important issue, so any change in the admission plan must go through a research and impact assessment process.

“I do not comment on whether including Literature in the medical school admissions is good or not. But when including Literature in the admissions, it must be evaluated by scientists, especially medical scientists. After having a scientific basis, there needs to be a legal document, not each school recruiting differently, changing the style each year," emphasized Professor Nguyen Anh Tri.

Looking back at the medical training process, Professor Nguyen Anh Tri said that the important subjects used as the basis for medical admission are Math, Chemistry, and Biology. If there is a need for innovation in the admission process, it must be based on scientific grounds.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thanh, Principal of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (VNU-Hanoi), former Director of Hospital E, also raised concerns when some training institutions expanded the admission combinations for the medical major, including Literature.

Mr. Thanh said that the medical industry in particular and the health sector in general must go through a long, elaborate training process and a difficult learning process, so training institutions need to be careful in their admission plans.

"Training institutions need to carefully consider recruiting Literature for the Medicine and Pharmacy industry. Students who want to pursue this field of study are usually those who are good at Biology and Chemistry. Now, if recruiting students with high Literature scores but low Natural Science scores will not be able to develop," said Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thanh.

To ensure input quality, the Ministry of Education and Training currently has regulations on input quality assurance thresholds (floor scores) when enrolling students in the Health sector. However, is this regulation sufficient in controlling input for medical training? Doctor Truong Hong Son said that it is time for the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health to review and re-evaluate current regulations on enrollment and training in the Medical and Pharmaceutical sectors.

"If we don't manage it closely, who knows, next year there might be a school that includes physical education in the medical entrance exam? Therefore, the specialized ministries need to sit down together to come up with a common regulation that determines which subjects can be used to select medical students. Each school should not come up with a different combination because the final output is to train doctors to take care of people's health," Dr. Truong Hong Son suggested.
