The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on September 8 that at least 132 people - aged 8 to 94 - were hospitalized in Hong Kong after the special administrative region suffered the heaviest rainfall in history, causing widespread flooding in just one night.
At 4:45 p.m. on September 8 (local time), Hong Kong canceled the flood warning after downgrading the rain warning from black to amber - the lowest in the three-level system - at 3:40 p.m. on the same day. The black rain warning was issued on the evening of September 7, the first since October 2021.
Torrential rain that lasted until the morning of September 8 also forced the closure of checkpoints at Heung Yuen Wai and Man Kam To, the immigration office, all public clinics and Hong Kong's postal service.
Videos shared on social media showed Hong Kong streets transformed into raging floodwaters. One clip showed a subway station submerged in water.
