Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi announced on February 14 that Arab countries are drafting a plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip that does not include the relocation of residents, in addition to ensuring security and governance for the territory. At the same time, Mr. Ayman added that his country cannot accept any more Palestinians.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on tensions in the Middle East, Jordan's Foreign Minister confirmed that Arab countries are working to finalize a proposal to rebuild Gaza without displacing people, and said that Israel also needs to think long-term about the region in the next 10 or 20 years.

Accordingly, if Tel Aviv wants to live in peace and security, its neighbors also need to achieve this goal.

Mr. Safadi also warned of the risk of escalating tensions in the West Bank as all attention is focused on Gaza. In addition, the Jordanian Foreign Minister admitted that the country cannot accept more Palestinians, because 35% of Jordan's population is currently refugees.

The statement came as Jordan's King Abdullah visited the United States earlier this week, reaffirming his opposition to President Donald Trump's plan to take over the Gaza Strip.

According to some diplomatic sources, at the meeting with President Trump, King Abdullah affirmed that the Arab countries' plan to rebuild Gaza would be "cheaper and faster" than Washington's proposal and it seems that the White House owner listened to this proposal.

On February 13, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the US is eager to hear new proposals from Arab countries on Gaza.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he hoped to discuss the ideas during stops in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well as Israel, following talks in Washington with Egypt and Jordan.

Earlier, Secretary General of the Arab League (AL) Ahmed Aboul-Gheit reaffirmed that the organization firmly opposes any efforts to relocate Palestinians from their land, while emphasizing that "the Gaza Strip is not for sale".

The Arab League chief said the Palestinian issue was “a major concern for both Arab peoples and governments,” adding that efforts to displace Palestinians were a “blatant injustice to their rights.” He also denounced Israel’s recent military escalation in the West Bank.
