How do clubs deal with VAR?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên01/05/2024

Forming bad habits before VAR comes along

Following the general trend of world football, VAR has become an indispensable part of matches. In continental tournaments, VAR has begun to be widely used. Vietnamese teams at all levels have played many times under the supervision of VAR and have received "bitter fruit" from this technology. This is largely due to the long-standing playing habits of many players in domestic tournaments, especially the V-League, where VAR has not yet been able to cover the entire match.

Ngân Văn Đại (29, CLB Quảng Nam) phạm lỗi ác ý với Đức Chiến (CLB Thể Công Viettel) nên sau khi xem VAR, trọng tài đã rút thẻ đỏ

Ngan Van Dai (29, Quang Nam Club) committed a malicious foul on Duc Chien (Viettel The Cong Club), so after watching VAR, the referee gave a red card.

Football expert Doan Minh Xuong said: "The speed of football matches is getting faster, more fierce and stronger. Therefore, to ensure accurate and objective football management, FIFA has decided to introduce VAR to support refereeing. In addition, the use of VAR also educates players on the spirit of fair play. Competing with the aim of winning, but still in the spirit of fair play."

The above is even more suitable for the characteristics of Vietnamese football. Tricky situations, crude fouls, even those aimed at destroying opponents... still appear, even in playgrounds with VAR like V-League. "Due to objective circumstances, Vietnamese football has just had VAR but it is not yet complete. In terms of management, the referee force has not been really strict with the players' crude fouls. Therefore, Vietnamese players have long formed bad habits, often using tricks, taking advantage of the referee's inattention or poor viewing angle to beat opponents in many ways (elbow, hand, tripping, kicking...). Therefore, Vietnamese teams when competing in international arenas will easily be at a disadvantage, because bad behavior of players cannot be hidden from VAR", said Mr. Xuong.

CLUBS WANT TO GIVE PLAYERS MORE TIME

Although VAR has appeared in the V-League since the end of the 2023 season, it seems that football teams have not really focused on educating players about this referee support technology. Before the season started, the V-League organizing committee sent supervisors and referees to the teams to explain in detail, show illustrative situations... but the players' awareness of VAR is still not really high. Therefore, the role of football teams is extremely important, because only the clubs are the ones who monitor the players every day, and have the responsibility to thoroughly communicate in each training session about the uses of VAR.

According to Mr. Doan Minh Xuong, only when VAR is truly taken seriously, Vietnamese players will learn to control their behavior and gradually give up bad habits. This is also an important factor to make the image of Vietnamese football more beautiful.

Coach Nguyen Duc Thang (Viettel The Cong Club) emphasized that many Vietnamese players must change their perception of playing football, as VAR is the "nemesis" of tricky playing style.

Meanwhile, coach Nguyen Thanh Cong (Ha Tinh Club) said: "VAR can help reduce violence on the field. Players need to control their behavior when playing on the field. However, habits cannot be broken overnight. Players are also human, and emotions on the field are sometimes difficult to control. Therefore, it takes time for players to break bad habits."

If you are smart, don't be afraid of VAR!

Expert Doan Minh Xuong shared: "If Vietnamese football wants to maintain stability in terms of achievements, it also needs to eliminate ugly playing styles. VAR will certainly continue to appear in the top arenas of the continent and the world. If Vietnamese teams do not want to pay the price, they must make adjustments, starting with the V-League playground, which is considered the foundation. There are 3 things to do: widely apply VAR in domestic tournaments, first of all, covering the V-League; refereeing needs to be stricter; clubs must strengthen football awareness education for players, this is the most important factor. In the current objective conditions, when VAR has not been widely applied, the awareness and fighting spirit of players play an extremely important role."

Similarly, coach Nguyen Duc Thang said: "Daily training sessions will form the players' habits. Competition is a manifestation of training habits. I always remind my players to play fiercely but wisely, not to play dirty. On the training ground, I can see the players' actions and behaviors and need to correct them right away, to limit unnecessary things when entering the field. Through the process of training and education, players will get rid of bad habits and not need to care about whether there is VAR or not."

Coach Nguyen Thanh Cong said: "The management and coaching staff must thoroughly understand the players' playing spirit, especially the presence of VAR. For me, I never encourage unsportsmanlike behavior. Players should only focus on playing football." (continued)

START FROM YOUNG TRAINING

Expert Doan Minh Xuong said: "Education to increase awareness of playing football without tricks and playing beautifully must also be carried out even in non-professional tournaments and especially in youth tournaments. Young players are the foundation of the V-League playground or many levels of the Vietnamese national team. Therefore, if young players are thoroughly educated, bad playing habits do not form from the beginning, then later there will be no need to worry about VAR".
