(CLO) The Brazilian government said in a statement on Monday (January 6) that Indonesia has officially joined BRICS as a full member, further expanding the group of emerging economies.
Indonesian media as well as Russian news agencies RIA and Sputnik have also confirmed the above information, after citing sources from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“As part of its BRICS Presidency, which begins on January 1 and ends on December 31, 2025, the Government of Brazil today, January 6, officially recognized the Republic of Indonesia as a full member of BRICS,” the Brazilian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“BRICS leaders confirmed Indonesia's candidacy during the Johannesburg Summit in August 2023, as part of the group's enlargement process to full members,” the statement added.
Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, has previously expressed interest in joining the group as a means of strengthening developing countries and promoting the interests of the so-called Global South.
“Indonesia shares the support of other members of the group for the reform of global governance institutions and actively contributes to strengthening cooperation in the Global South,” the Brazilian government added.
The BRICS group was founded by five original members: Russia, China, India, Brazil and South Africa. Before Indonesia, the bloc also added Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
