In the 3x3 women's basketball semi-finals this morning, the Vietnamese team defeated Indonesia 21-17 and won a ticket to the final against the Philippines, taking place at 12 noon today.
Vietnam women's basketball team (white shirt) played excellently in the final match
Previously in the group stage, Vietnam defeated the Philippines (21-19 in extra time) and if they repeat the same thing, the Vietnamese girls will make history as the first-ever champion of this event. And not disappointing the fans' expectations, the Vietnamese women's team excellently defeated their opponents to step up to the highest podium to receive the medal.
The Vietnamese girls overcame difficult times to win.
The final match between Vietnam and the Philippines was exciting from the start as the two teams competed for every point. The Vietnamese team with 4 athletes Huynh Thi Ngoan, Nguyen Thi Tieu Duy, Truong Thao My and Truong Thao Vy (3 official athletes, 1 reserve athlete) was behind 3-5 at the beginning of the match, but Thao My and Thao Vy scored 4 points in a row to help Vietnam lead 7-5. Continuing the excitement, the Vietnamese girls took the lead 9-5, 11-8 and then 14-11. Although the match became tense at times when the Philippines reduced the score to 15-16, Thao My's excellence and her steadfastness at the end of the match helped the Vietnamese girls win 21-16.
The whole team cried after the match, they were tears of happiness.
Commenting on this achievement, Head of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation at the 32nd SEA Games Dang Ha Viet said: “I was really moved when I saw the Vietnamese women's basketball team win. Gold medals in basketball are very difficult. We have football that has won the SEA Games gold medal, while volleyball and handball have not been able to do so despite great efforts. Now that basketball has won the SEA Games gold medal, this is truly a great happiness for those working in sports. This is also a strategy to develop 3x3 basketball content in Vietnam.”
This gold medal is the result of efforts.
The Vietnamese women's team won the gold medal and changed the color of the medal after the team lost to Thailand in the final of the 31st SEA Games. This is also the highest achievement of Vietnamese basketball in the history of participating in the SEA Games. Immediately after the match ended, the Vietnamese girls covered their faces and cried together, they knelt down on the court, moved with boundless happiness.
The achievements of Vietnamese girls have gone down in the history of national sports.
Speaking after the match, American athlete Truong Thao Vy said: “I am so happy to win the gold medal with my team. The most emotional moment for me was when the referee blew the final whistle and the fans shouted Vietnam is the champion. That was really a happy thing. I also had difficulties when competing with tall opponents from the Philippines in the semi-finals. But playing alongside my sister (Thao My - PV) also helped me a lot. I was born in Vietnam and then came to the US. Now being able to return to contribute to my homeland and win the gold medal like that will be a memory that I will remember forever.”
The whole team shares joy with fans and domestic media
To win this precious gold medal, the Vietnamese girls have made great efforts to overcome the harsh hot weather in Cambodia. Even after the semi-final match with the Philippines, the team had players injured. But overcoming all that, Thao My and the other teams fought with the highest determination to bring glory to the country.
