Wife quietly leaves sick husband and young children
Mr. Cao Nhu The (born in 1991), residing in Liem Hoa village, Trung Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district, Quang Binh province. This man has continuously encountered changes in his life.
Born into a poor family, after graduating from high school, Mr. The went to Dong Nai province to work. In 2011, he got married and had a lovely son named Cao Gia An.

However, the peaceful life only lasted for 6 years before disaster struck. In 2017, Mr. The discovered that he had kidney failure and his hands and feet were swollen. Life was not good, Mr. The fell ill, dragging his wife and children into poverty. A few months later, unable to bear the pressures of life, Mr. The's wife quietly left, leaving behind the sick man and their child under 6 years old.
To pay for dialysis and raise his children, Mr. The did all kinds of jobs from selling vegetables, soft drinks to lottery tickets, driving motorbike taxis... doing whatever he was hired to do, trying hard every day, contributing every penny.
To stay alive, Mr. The goes to the hospital for dialysis three times a week (Photo: Tien Thanh).
In 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, the lives of Mr. The and his son became even more difficult. Work was suspended, income decreased while medical expenses increased. Unable to stay in a foreign land with his young child, Mr. The decided to bring his child back to his hometown in Quang Binh.
On the small garden left by his parents, Mr. Thế borrowed money to build a temporary house of about 20 square meters, enough to put a bed, a study table for his son and a place to cook. Every time it rains, the father and son have to stretch out a tarp to avoid leaks. To maintain life, Mr. Thế goes to the hospital for dialysis three times a week.
On days when he was not in the hospital, Mr. The went to the market and did whatever he was hired to do. If he was lucky, he could earn 50,000-70,000 VND. Recently, he was sick and could not do heavy work, so few people hired him. His illness became worse and worse, his hands and feet were swollen and full of scars. Not only that, he also had degenerative spine disease, and his blood pressure fluctuated frequently, causing him great pain.
After his mother left, Gia An and his sick father clung to each other, living from hand to mouth (Photo: Tien Thanh).
The dream of a poor student
Mr. The's son, Cao Gia An, is studying at Trung Hoa Secondary and High School. Because he sympathizes with his father's illness and understands his family's situation, An is very obedient and hard-working. An is a great motivation for Mr. The in his journey to fight the disease.
Because his family was poor, An had to go to school almost every morning with an empty stomach. After school, coming home to a bowl of rice with vegetables or a pack of instant noodles was a blessing. Despite all the hardship, An studied very well.
From grade 1 to grade 5, An was an excellent student. His outstanding points were his ability to learn, communicate, and sing in English. In addition, he excelled in literature, math, life skills, sports, and music compared to his peers.
Despite all the hardships and disadvantages, Gia An is still a very good student and obedient (Photo: Tien Thanh).
In the 2022-2023 school year, An won second prize in the English speaking contest with mind maps for primary school students at the district level. An also tutored and helped his classmates in the grade, so he was very loved by teachers and friends.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Trung, Gia An's homeroom teacher, said that in his recent 9-point essay, An made many teachers and classmates cry, and everyone felt sorry for his situation.
"In that essay, An talked about her family, about her sick father, about her mother who left, about her hardships as well as her simple dreams. In the essay, An did not blame her mother but only wished that she would come back to her. Reading that essay, I could not hold back my tears, through which I could see how much hardship An had suffered," Mr. Trung confided.
Not only is An a good and studious child, he is also a filial son who loves his father. This student never hangs around, but after school he rushes home to help his father cook, wash clothes, and take care of him when he is sick. An's dream is for his father's illness to improve, for the two of them to have enough to eat, and for him to continue going to school.
After each school hour, An runs home to take care of and help his father with housework (Photo: Tien Thanh).
"My friends all have fathers and mothers, but my mother left and my father is sick, so I feel very sad. Every day I wish my mother would come back to us and hope my father will recover soon," An confided.
Talking about the situation of An and his son, Mr. Cao Xuan Duong, Chairman of Trung Hoa Commune People's Committee, said that this is a poor household in the locality, with makeshift housing. Mr. The lives as a "single father raising children" and is also seriously ill, so life is extremely difficult.
According to Mr. Duong, to share with An's family, the locality has called on organizations, groups, and philanthropists to help, however, the support is not enough to help Mr. The with medical treatment and daily expenses. Mr. Duong hopes that the community will join hands to help, so that this poor family can overcome this difficult period.
