The first musical film project about Truong Sa
The film was made to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first victory of the Vietnam People's Navy and the army and people of the North (August 2 and 5, 1964 - August 2 and 5, 2024), and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2024).
“Truong Sa – Ben bo trong nhau” tells the story of a navy soldier with a family tradition of 4 generations of navy soldiers. The film depicts the image of a navy soldier in the new era, along with touching stories about the sacrifices of the soldiers and their rear.
This is also the first musical film made in Truong Sa, with the support of the Navy in terms of forces and equipment.
The songs in the film about soldiers are performed by Meritorious Artist Khanh Hoa - a female artist who always prioritizes her career to sing about the sea and islands, especially Truong Sa.
Speaking at the film premiere, Rear Admiral Pham Van Luyen, Deputy Chief of Political Affairs of the Navy, said that to contribute to the success of the film, the Party Committee - Head of the Navy Command directed functional agencies and affiliated units to do a good job of preparation, closely coordinate with the film crew, mobilize and use many means and military technical equipment such as warships, transport ships, cargo ships, airplanes, cars; mobilize more than 1,000 people to participate in filming from main roles to extras... ensuring thoughtfulness, efficiency, preserving military secrets, security and absolute safety.
The biggest musical film project of Vietnam Television's Arts Department
Journalist Tran Hong Ha - Deputy of the Arts Department, who directly directed and accompanied the project, said that this was the first time the Arts Department produced a musical film with such a large scale and investment in intelligence. The filming took place over a month with many scenes filmed in many different spaces such as on land, in military zones, in bays, on the ocean and many islands in Truong Sa archipelago...
To make this film, the Arts Department mobilized hundreds of production staff from many different departments. This is a film with scenes shot in large spaces, the production process requires continuous movement and compliance with all strict regulations of the Ministry of National Defense on safety and security of islands, with high work intensity (some working days are 20 hours) under harsh weather.
Journalist Dang Huong, project manager, said that the musical film “Truong Sa – Ben bo trong nhau” took nearly 2 years from start to completion. Filming took nearly 1 month at Cam Ranh Peninsula, Naval Region 4, Truong Sa Archipelago and DK1 Platform.
The film has the participation of 3 veteran directors: main director Phu Tran, assistant director Nguyen Sy Khoa and director of photography Trinh Minh Tuan.
Director Phu Tran shared that when he received the script for the musical film “Truong Sa – Ben bo trong nhau”, the first difficult problem he had to solve was the challenge of 3 genres: musical film, feature film and documentary film with realistic elements. He said that the film is based on real stories and details of the Vietnam Navy in history, the story of the Gac Ma battle on the sea route to Truong Sa. The material used is the personal stories of the soldiers and the rear.
Director Phu Tran shared that one of the most impressive and memorable scenes was the scene where Meritorious Artist Khanh Hoa performed the song “Noi a la Truong Sa”, with a symphony orchestra playing in the middle of the ocean. With the help of the Navy, the entire symphony orchestra gathered on the Yet Kieu ship in Cam Ranh Bay, Navy Region 4, with two missile frigates on both sides, creating a beautiful and overwhelming scene. This was the first time the audience saw the entire Vietnam Symphony Orchestra perform on a ship in the middle of Truong Sa and this was also the first time the Orchestra performed in this context. That brought sublimation to all the artists.
Special emotions of generations of artists participating in the film
“Truong Sa – Ben bo trong nhau” brings together a cast of 6 generations to participate: Journalist and diplomat Dinh Quang Tien, generation 5X, People's Artist Manh Cuong and Meritorious Artist Minh Phuong, generation 6X, Meritorious Artist Khanh Hoa, generation 7X, actor Tien Loc, generation 8X, Huyen Thach and Binh An, generation 9X, baby Cao Tran Bao Khang and Xuan Truong, generation 2k2...
Not only playing the main role as the artist performing all the songs in the film, being an actor, being the one who initiated the idea for the film, writing the literary script with musician Le Tam, Meritorious Artist Khanh Hoa also supported the production of the film... She shared that what is on screen cannot fully express what is witnessed with the eyes and emotions, but she firmly believes that it will make every Vietnamese person who watches it feel proud and honored.
The stories in the film were all distilled from the trips to Truong Sa by both Meritorious Artist Khanh Hoa and musician Le Tam as well as many people in the production team. The film has touching details such as the young wife writing a letter to her husband but before she could send it, he died, the wife asking her daughter-in-law to take the letter to Truong Sa and throw it into the sea; or the detail of little Xuan Truong being teased by his friends for not having a father when going to school, his mother cutting off his father's shirt, sewing it smaller for him to wear and lying that it was a gift his father sent from Truong Sa... all were inspired by true stories. Not only depicting the life of a navy soldier in the mission of protecting the sacred sea of the Fatherland, the film also brings many images of a beautiful and romantic Truong Sa, contributing to promoting the image of a radiant and beautiful Vietnam.
For journalist and diplomat Dinh Quang Tien, this was also the first time he had come to Truong Sa. “Directly participating in the filming, I felt that my country is so beautiful and there is nothing more precious than preserving the islands, the sacred land of the Fatherland, which is the work of many generations of ancestors.”
Participating in the film “Truong Sa – Ben bo trong nhau” with the 6X generation like People's Artist Manh Cuong and Meritorious Artist Minh Phuong, is an opportunity for them to remember the old days when they were soldiers, or the time when they were children always waiting for their father to return from the army.
People's Artist Manh Cuong shared: "The character I play is a father and grandfather who devoted his beautiful youth to the Fatherland. I was also a soldier, also shouldered guns and bullets and lived in the atmosphere of war. That period of time was enough for me to absorb the hardships of my father and brothers and portray my character with all respect."
For young artists, the film also left them with many strong impressions. Actor Tien Loc, who plays a navy soldier in the film, said: “Witnessing the daily life of the island soldiers, I understand and respect them more, and play the role more emotionally.”
As for actor Binh An, the 7-day journey from Cam Ranh military port to the islands outside Truong Sa, each day had countless memorable memories: “The trip to Truong Sa was extremely meaningful to me. There were so many memories I can never forget on that journey. Especially the special feeling I had when I wore the uniform of a navy soldier standing on the military port, clearly feeling the pride of a soldier”.
Also a 9X generation actress, Huyen Thach feels honored and proud to take on a role in the film “Truong Sa – Ben bo trong nhau”. For her, the most special scene is the memorial scene for the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the battle of Gac Ma: “I can’t stop crying, even now when I sit down to tell it, I still can’t help but choke up. And the scene of saying goodbye to Truong Sa, all the Navy soldiers lined up to sing songs about soldiers and the Fatherland until the ship disappeared, the whole ship sang along, shouting the slogan “The whole country for Truong Sa, Truong Sa for the Fatherland”, everyone was moved. It was truly an unforgettable trip for me”.
The musical film “Truong Sa – Ben bo trong nhau” has brought special emotions even before it aired, and is continuing to spread those emotions to young people, starting with the members participating in the project. The film is expected to be broadcast at 2:10 p.m. on August 4 on VTV1.
