As planned, on August 20, the Ministry of Public Security will coordinate with the asset auction unit to organize the first auction of car license plates. To prepare for this, the Ministry of Public Security recently published a list of more than 153,000 car license plates that will be auctioned.

Among the more than 153,000 car license plates expected to be auctioned, there are many license plates ending in "49, 53" which many people consider "bad" and not in accordance with feng shui.

There is "ugly" and "beautiful" too.

According to records, more than 153,000 car license plates mentioned above are from 63 provinces and centrally-run cities, and are being managed in the license plate warehouse.

There are 4 license plate ranges of 4 types of cars put up for auction, including: cars, buses, trucks and vans.

Among these, some "five-of-a-kind" license plates are considered by many to be super beautiful, for cars, such as: 37K-222.22 (Nghe An), 38A-555.55 (Ha Tinh), 51K-777.77 and 51K-888.88 (HCMC), 75A-333.33 (Thua Thien - Hue) and 98A-666.66 (Bac Giang)....

In addition, the list also shows many license plates ending in "49, 53". For example, in Cao Bang province's license plate, there are 11A-107.49, 11A-107.53, 11A-106.53...; in Lang Son province, there are 12A-219.49, 12A-220.53...; in Hanoi, there are 30K-595.49, 30K-549.53; in Ho Chi Minh City, there are 51K-849.53, 51K-949.53....

The pilot auction of car license plates is expected to bring transparency to vehicle registration and create a large source of revenue for the budget.

Regarding the auction list including car license plates ending in "49, 53", many opinions said that these are "bad" or "not in accordance with feng shui", "it is unclear why they are still on the list?".

Ms. Ha Thi Phuong (living in Hanoi) said she was quite surprised that the list of car license plates put up for auction had so many license plates ending in "49, 53". Although there is no official convention, Ms. Phuong and many others believe that license plates ending in "49, 53" are not beautiful, if given the choice, very few people would want to pick this license plate, let alone put it on the auction list.

Some drivers suggest that only "five of a kind" (5 identical numbers), "four of a kind" (4 identical numbers) or "progressive" (5 progressive numbers) license plates should be auctioned, for example. Because these license plates are sought after by many people.

No distinction between "ugly" and "beautiful"

According to the representative of the Traffic Police Department (C08, Ministry of Public Security), the auction is conducted for all car license plates, without any distinction. The Ministry of Public Security does not give the concept of "ugly" or "nice" license plates, because the same license plate may be considered beautiful by one person but not by another. Therefore, "ugly" or "nice" will depend on the needs and preferences of the auction participants.

The above explanation is consistent with reality, because besides those who want to choose a license plate according to their preferences, many people also have the mentality of "whatever", "license plates are just meaningless numbers so they are not important"...

The value of each car license plate will depend on the number of people participating in the auction.

In the decision approving the plan to organize the first auction, signed by the Minister of Public Security, all car license plates put up for auction will have the same starting price, 40 million VND. Each step price when conducting the auction is 5 million VND.

Thus, the auction value of the license plate will be high or low depending on the number of people participating in the auction of that license plate. If many people think the license plate is "nice", it means that there are many people bidding, many price steps, the value will be higher.

There is a situation that can happen, that is, there are license plates that only one person participates in the auction, because only they find them "beautiful". To resolve this situation, Resolution 73/2023 of the National Assembly clearly states: when the registration period expires and only one person registers to participate in the auction, or there are many people registering to participate in the auction but only one person participates in the auction, or there are many people participating in the auction but only one person bids at least equal to the starting price of a car license plate put up for auction, the car license plate put up for auction will be transferred to that person.

After the auction ends, the license plates that are not successfully bid for or are not selected will be put into the license plate warehouse managed by the police agency, to be randomly issued to vehicle owners who do not wish to participate in the auction.
