The Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts has just received a portrait statue of painter Nguyen Do Cung, donated by the family of painter and sculptor Tran Tuy.
Painter Nguyen Do Cung was the first Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum. Through the work “Portrait of Painter Nguyen Do Cung”, author Tran Tuy wants to express his gratitude to the teacher, the leader who had a profound influence, guiding the first steps on his artistic path.

The work "Portrait of painter Nguyen Do Cung" is a bust portrait created by sculptor Tran Tuy in 2003, made of plaster. The statue is 61 cm high, 34 cm wide, 26 cm deep, finished with a layer of dark yellow paint.
The work has a style commonly found in 18th century Western portrait sculptures, close to realism and authenticity, emphasizing the personality and character of the person being sculpted.
At the ceremony, Mr. Tran Nhat Hoang, son of sculptor Tran Tuy, expressed his honor and respect when his family was presented with his father's artwork to the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, where the museum will preserve, promote and disseminate the work to the public.
This is an important and meaningful event, the family's sentiments sent to the Museum, with the hope of contributing and dedicating a part of their efforts to the Museum.
Director of the Fine Arts Museum Nguyen Anh Minh expressed his respect for the sentiments and noble gesture of sculptor Tran Tuy's family.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Minh affirmed that sculptor Tran Tuy created a very beautiful portrait statue of painter Nguyen Do Cung, with extremely vivid lines and expressions.
The Museum of Fine Arts is committed to preserving and promoting the best value of the works in the future, so that future generations will remember sculptor Tran Tuy and painter Do Cung.
Mr. Minh expressed his wish and called on artists, collectors, businesses, etc. to continue to support and contribute to the collection and donation of valuable works to the museum, so that the museum can have more fine art works, so that future generations have the opportunity to enjoy the fine art works left by previous generations.
Painter and sculptor Tran Tuy was born in 1942 and passed away in 2019. He graduated from the Sculpture Department of Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts, class 1 (1959-1963) and Hanoi University of Fine Arts.
He worked at many agencies such as: Museum of Fine Arts (1963 - 1972), Institute of Fine Arts, Journal of Cultural and Artistic Research (1972-1993). From 1993, he was Editor-in-Chief of Fine Arts Magazine and Deputy Director of Fine Arts Publishing House until his retirement in 2002.

During his artistic career in the fields of monuments and sculptures, sculptor Tran Tuy has left his creative mark with a style that is both modern and imbued with the traditional Vietnamese sculpture heritage. In addition, he is also a journalist, a researcher, theorist, and art critic.
He has been awarded: Third-class Anti-American Resistance Medal; Third-class Labor Medal; Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister; 40-year Party membership badge; Medal for the Cause of Vietnamese Fine Arts and many other titles and certificates of merit from many organizations.
