(CLO) The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) recently announced that it had discovered $1.9 billion "missing" under the Joe Biden administration. This amount belonged to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and has been recovered.

The announcement comes a day after HUD Secretary Scott Turner announced the creation of a DOGE task force within his agency.

“HUD’s $1.9 billion has just been recovered after being lost due to a faulty process. The funds were originally allocated for financial services management but are no longer needed,” according to a DOGE announcement.

HUD Secretary Scott Turner worked with DOGE to correct the problem, cancel the commitment for the funds, and return them to the Treasury for other uses.

A day earlier, Mr. Turner announced the creation of a DOGE task force within his agency, pledging to closely monitor every expenditure aimed at serving tribal, rural and urban communities nationwide.

DOGE recently cut more than $1 billion in government spending in its first three weeks of operation, primarily targeting programs that were deemed wasteful. The long-term goal is to save $2 trillion, which could lead to major changes in budget policy.

The cuts have raised concerns about the impact on public programs and the federal workforce. Some say the sudden adjustment could affect critical services.

However, billionaire Elon Musk and DOGE continue to plan to review finances with the expectation of eliminating hundreds of billions of dollars in unreasonable spending in the coming years.
