Security tightened, people braved the rain and snow

At an altitude of about 230 m in the sky of Washington (USA), a brand new and modern helicopter of the US Capitol Police Department will be on duty on the day of the inauguration of President Donald Trump tonight (Vietnam time).

People patiently stood in the snow and hail to wait their turn to enter the Capital One Arena on January 19.

The helicopter, piloted by Jeff Hertel, was monitoring the crowd from above during Donald Trump's inauguration. "And there were suspicious vehicles out in the periphery, large trucks and things like that," CBS quoted the pilot as saying.

Mr. Hertel said the helicopter allows law enforcement officials to have remote viewing capabilities.

"You might see a car speeding by, or you might look at a rooftop in the dark to see if there's an intruder, or if the subject is carrying a weapon," the pilot said.

The camera system on the helicopter can read license plates at a distance of more than 300 meters, sending real-time images to the crime processing center of the Capital Police Department.

"The helicopter allows us to really see what's happening across the city, especially in large crowds," CBS News quoted Metropolitan Police Department Director Pamela Smith as saying.

Ms Smith said police forces were on high alert for the risk of "lone wolf" attacks, or copycat terrorist attacks.

While the official events of Mr. Trump's inauguration are taking place indoors, the Capitol Police Department is still preparing in case protests occur outside of secured locations.

Eight years ago, hundreds of people were arrested while protesting against Mr. Trump during his first inauguration in 2017.

Ms. Smith said the number of police patrolling high-risk areas has been increased, and security for the capital is being supported by national guard forces in other US states.

Meanwhile, thousands of Trump supporters waited patiently in line for hours despite hail and heavy snowfall in Washington, DC, to attend his final rally before the inauguration.

Lines of supporters stretched across several blocks, with soldiers guiding people in the right direction to Capital One, the capital's 20,000-seat arena.

Temporary fences are erected in Washington DC during the inauguration ceremony.

"I'm glad to be here to support (him)," AFP quoted Loren Stephenson, 40, who wrapped an American flag tightly around her head to shield herself from the hail. "It's been a long day, but overall everyone is in a great mood," she said.

Ms. Stephenson said she had been in line since 6 a.m. on January 19 to ensure she could get inside the Capital One Arena to witness Mr. Trump's victory celebration.

A Trump supporter from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, travels to Washington DC.

Christina Overby, a 53-year-old office worker, is looking forward to the moment when Mr. Trump returns to the White House.

"He will help us get back on track," AFP quoted Ms. Overby as saying, adding that she supported the decision to deport illegal immigrants, who she said had deprived Americans like her family of opportunities.

As the snowfall thickened, supporters were eager to get inside the arena as quickly as possible, especially when groups like the Village People and Kid Rock took the stage.

But for Mrs. Overby, she didn't come here to watch other people dance on stage.

“I want to see my president. That's why I'm here,” she concluded.
