The 42-seat bus was en route to the southern city of Jammu from the town of Kishtwar when it skidded off a Himalayan highway and rolled about 200 meters down a slope onto another road in Indian-controlled Kashmir, AP reported.
Locals and authorities rushed to the accident site and rescue operations were launched. At least 10 people in critical condition have been shifted to a hospital in Jammu. The exact cause of the accident is under investigation.
India has one of the highest road accident fatality rates in the world, with hundreds of thousands of people killed and injured each year. Most accidents are caused by driver error, poorly maintained roads and old vehicles.
