(CLO) Five people were still hospitalized on February 2 after a small plane carrying a child and his mother crashed in Philadelphia on the night of January 31, killing seven people.

All six people on board the air ambulance were killed, including the crew, the child and the child’s mother. One person on the ground also died. At least 22 people on the ground were injured, three of whom are in critical condition, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident and recovered the cockpit voice recorder on February 2 to assist in the investigation.

At least 11 homes were severely damaged in the crash. A temporary shelter remains in place at the local high school.

The plane's operator released a photo showing the plane's interior before the fatal crash.

Six people on the plane were Mexican nationals, including a girl being treated at Shriners Hospital for Children in northeast Philadelphia and her mother. They were returning to Mexico after she completed treatment, with the final destination being Tijuana.

The plane had just taken off and was flying for less than a minute before crashing into a residential area, burning down five houses, many vehicles and leaving debris all over the area.

Images from the scene showed houses burned to the ground, with smoke billowing into the air, while several nearby businesses were also damaged. By the following day, the area was cordoned off with charred vehicles strewn across the road.

About 150 personnel from multiple agencies, including local police, the Pennsylvania Department of Environment and Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the NTSB, are processing the scene and assisting in the investigation.

Debris from the crash was scattered across four to six buildings, indicating the extent of the devastation, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.
