The highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of Honorary Doctorates to two particularly outstanding individuals: Former Australian Ambassador to Vietnam for the 2022-2024 term, Mr. Andrew Goledzinowski, received an Honorary Doctorate in Law, and Ms. Dang Thi Huong, Founder of social enterprise HopeBox, received an Honorary Doctorate in Economics.

An Honorary Doctorate was awarded to Sir Andrew Goledzinowski for his contributions to education and the economy of Vietnam, Australia and elsewhere in the world, as well as strengthening diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Australia.

Dang Thi Huong’s journey began in a poor village in Vinh Phuc province. Coming to Hanoi at the age of 13, Huong was introduced to KOTO, a not-for-profit social enterprise supporting disadvantaged and disadvantaged youth. Her determination led her to an Australian scholarship, a successful career in technology, and the founding of HopeBox, a social enterprise supporting women who have escaped violence in Vietnam, rebuilding their confidence and lives. Globally recognised for her contributions to education and social change, Huong is a testament to the transformative power of education and a role model for the RMIT University community.

Speaking at the ceremony in Hanoi, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Gillian Bird expressed her satisfaction with the contributions that RMIT University has made to Vietnam's education.

“RMIT University delivers high-quality Australian education and has a lasting impact on communities in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and across Vietnam,” she said. “The relationship between Australia and Vietnam is stronger than ever. Last year, we celebrated the elevation of our bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, building on decades of cooperation in key areas such as trade, security and education. Education remains a fundamental part of our relationship and the role of Australian institutions operating in Vietnam is vital. Through transnational education programs, student exchanges and research collaboration, Australian universities have become a vital part of Vietnam’s education landscape.”
