On May 10, the High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City sentenced defendant Nguyen Kim Trung Thai, the biological father in the case of an 8-year-old girl who was abused to death in an apartment in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City.

Accordingly, the Trial Panel rejected all appeals by the lawyer defending the legitimate rights and interests of the victim. At the same time, the first instance sentence of 8 years in prison was upheld for the defendant Nguyen Kim Trung Thai for the two crimes of “Torturing others” and “Concealing a crime”.
The jury determined that while witnessing Nguyen Vo Quynh Trang (Thai’s lover) abusing his daughter, the defendant Thai used words to try to stop her but did not take any action to stop her. Therefore, there is a basis to determine that Thai was an accomplice with Trang in the crime of “Torturing others”.
On the other hand, the forensic autopsy conclusion explained that the injuries on the victim's body, with the age of the wounds ranging from about 1-6 hours, were the cause of the child's death.
For old wounds that are in the process of healing plus new injuries are additional factors that cause the victim's death, not the direct cause.
From there, the trial panel rejected all appeals of the lawyer protecting the legitimate rights and interests of the victim and upheld the first instance sentence of 8 years in prison for the defendant Nguyen Kim Trung Thai.
Previously, when the court sentenced Nguyen Vo Quynh Trang to death, the defendant filed an appeal but later withdrew it. The panel of judges of the High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City accepted this request and suspended the appeal trial, upholding the original sentence for this defendant.
According to the indictment, during the time living as husband and wife with Nguyen Kim Trung Thai and his son, Nguyen Vo Quynh Trang repeatedly beat and brutally tortured A. in many different ways, continuously for many days and many hours.
Defendant Nguyen Kim Trung Thai witnessed it many times but did not take any action to stop it, and even joined Trang in torturing his daughter.
When the child died from severe injuries, Thai also tried to delete the camera data to cover up his actions with his lover.
