64 officers and soldiers of the Vietnam People's Navy heroically sacrificed their lives on March 14, 1988 to protect Gac Ma, Truong Sa, forever engraved in the hearts of millions of Vietnamese people.

One of the activities of special sacred significance during the voyage was that Working Group No. 3 solemnly held a memorial service for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the cause of protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands. In the sacred and emotional atmosphere, many delegates in attendance could not hold back their tears, remembering the merits of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to protect the peace of the Fatherland's sea. Comrade Lai Xuan Mon - Member of the Party Central Committee, Permanent Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, offered incense to commemorate the heroic martyrs who fell to protect the Fatherland's sea. The blood of the heroic martyrs of Gac Ma merged with the blue sea, their bones soaked into the island, their names will be remembered forever by today's and future generations. Members of the delegation took turns burning incense in memory of the 64 martyrs. “Sacrificing themselves at Gac Ma island/You used your chest as a shield/So that the Fatherland could be born once again/Your blood soaked into the deep sea”. Over 250 paper cranes were folded by the logistics team and female delegates diligently and persistently in 2 nights. Although before that, there were members who were seasick and could not get up all day, but when they sat down to fold paper cranes, all fatigue seemed to disappear. The members of the delegation took turns receiving paper cranes and flowers to release into the sea. Lieutenant General Le Van Thang, Director of the People's Security Academy, was moved to release flower lanterns to pay tribute to the sacrifices of heroic martyrs. You have merged into the ocean, but at your monuments, flowers are blooming, and the banyan and Indian almond trees are growing green. The undulating waves seemed to soothe their wounds. The cool, deep blue water embraced them like a mother's heart, washing away their loss and sacrifice. The sacredness of the heroic martyrs made the fresh flowers and paper cranes that the delegation dropped into the sea during the Memorial Ceremony always form a triangle and float straight towards the island.
