This is the information shared by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien at the press conference summarizing the work in 2023 and proposing tasks and solutions for 2024 of the Ministry held in Hanoi on December 29.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that the significant contribution from export industries in 2023 will be an important driving force to help the agricultural sector develop rapidly, towards the export target of 54-55 billion USD.

In the face of challenges and difficulties, the agricultural sector recorded an impressive achievement when the total added value (GDP) of the sector skyrocketed to 3.83%. This is the highest growth rate in the past 10 years.

Total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products reached 53.01 billion USD. The export value of agricultural, forestry and fishery products exceeded the record with 12.07 billion USD, up 43.7%, accounting for over 42.5% of the total export turnover of the country. In particular, some export items also recorded record numbers such as vegetables and fruits reaching 5.69 billion USD, up 69.2%, and rice reaching 4.78 billion USD, up 38.4%.

Among the six export items reaching over 3 billion USD, many items had impressive growth such as vegetables and fruits up 69.2%, rice up 38.4%, cashew nuts up 17.6%, coffee up 3.1%. However, despite maintaining their important positions, some items such as shrimp and wood have seen a decrease in export value.

Agriculture continues to demonstrate its important position as a pillar of the economy. At the same time, it ensures food security and creates a large balance in the economy, contributing to the stability of the macro economy. Notably, rice output increased by 1.7% compared to 2022, reaching 43.4 million tons; meat output increased by 3.5%, reaching 7.6 million tons; and aquatic product output increased by 2.9%, reaching 9.3 million tons.

Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien also announced that the industry will continue to flexibly manage production and monitor market signals to achieve growth and export targets.

Mr. Nguyen Van Viet, Director of the Planning Department, forecasts that 2024 will face many difficulties and challenges, including high prices of raw materials, plant and animal diseases, unusual weather conditions, and impacts from conflicts and world instability. However, the agriculture and rural development sector still sets a target of GDP growth of the whole sector at 3 - 3.5%, with agricultural, forestry and fishery export turnover of 54 - 55 billion USD.

To achieve these goals, Mr. Nguyen Van Viet said that the industry will continue to restructure agricultural development towards ecological, modern and circular economy, especially in promoting "Sustainable, transparent and responsible agriculture".

The industry will shift from agricultural production thinking to agricultural economic thinking, from single-sector development to multi-sector cooperation, promote multi-value integration in agricultural, forestry and fishery products and develop industry chains.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will create development space and growth momentum for the sector, along with restructuring the sector, improving productivity and quality of agricultural products. Along with that, the Ministry and localities will innovate and develop forms of production and business organization in agriculture, supporting forms of cooperation and production linkages along the value chain.

At the same time, the industry will focus on developing domestic and export markets for agricultural, forestry and fishery products, building value chains for each type of agricultural product, and developing agricultural and rural logistics infrastructure to ensure the domestic market supply chain./.
