Mr. Phung Duc Tien - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development - said that these figures demonstrate strong growth and potential for sustainable cooperation between the two countries.
According to Mr. Phung Duc Tien, Vietnam attaches great importance to opening its market for agricultural products and has made many advances, such as the US allowing the import of fresh coconuts and grapefruits in 2023. Vietnam also opened its doors to grapefruits, peaches, and nectarines from the US in July 2024. Agencies of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development are completing procedures for other products such as oranges, tangerines, and seedless lemons from the US to enter Vietnam.
Regarding animal products, Mr. Nguyen Van Long - Director of the Department of Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) - said that Vietnam has approved the import of 560 animal products from the United States, the largest number among 26 countries importing animal products to Vietnam. However, the trade balance of animal products is still not balanced. Therefore, Mr. Nguyen Van Long hopes that the competent authorities of the United States will create more favorable conditions for the export of animal products from Vietnam to the US market. He also expects the United States to share its experience in disease control in livestock farming and antibiotic resistance.
Mr. Le Thanh Hoa - Deputy Director of the Department of Quality, Processing and Market Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) - informed that in the first 8 months of 2024, catfish exports to the United States decreased by about 30% compared to the same period last year. Since this is one of the main export products, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development proposed that USDA create conditions and support to promote the product to international consumers.
Acknowledging the comments from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms. Alexis Taylor - Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) said that, with the role of the US Embassy and the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service in Vietnam, the problems raised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will soon be resolved to ensure a balanced trade balance between the two countries.
