According to AP, recorded videos showed many pieces of broken glass in the parking lot at the Willowbrook shopping center, about 32km southwest of Chicago, full of broken glass.
Local police said the victims were taken to the nearest medical facility for emergency treatment.
"We all just got outside, and the next thing you know, gunshots. People were running, and it was chaos," said a witness at the scene.
Another witness said: "As we were about to leave, we started hearing gunshots from behind."
The incident at a shopping mall in the suburbs of Chicago has once again raised concerns amid a series of shootings in the US recently.

The shooting occurred at around 5:00 p.m. local time on June 6 (4:00 a.m. June 7, Hanoi time) on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, where a high school graduation ceremony was taking place.
Or before that, 9 people were injured in a shooting that occurred on the morning of May 30 (Vietnam time) on the boardwalk along Hollywood Beach in the US state of Florida.
The incident has left many tourists enjoying the Memorial Day holiday here in panic.
Police spokeswoman Deanna Bettineschi said the gunshot victims included four children between the ages of 1 and 17 and five people between the ages of 25 and 65.
Several people were taken to hospital. One had surgery, the rest are in stable condition.
