Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said the motive for the shooting appears to have been a “combination of factors.” Authorities are investigating whether Natalie may have been bullied at school, as well as examining the authenticity of a “manifesto” believed to have been written by the gunman, which could shed light on the motive for the attack.
“Determining the motive is our top priority and we are appealing to the public for further information about the perpetrator,” Mr Barnes stressed.
The assailant attacked a classroom at around 11am on December 18 (local time). It took rescuers only 3 minutes to reach the scene after the emergency call. According to the investigation, the assailant used a 9mm pistol.
President Joe Biden in a statement called on the US Congress to push for national gun background checks and other gun control measures. He stressed: “We cannot accept senseless acts of violence that deeply hurt children, families and entire communities.”
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers called the incident “unthinkable” and said no one should have to face such a situation at school.
The Madison shooting is just one of dozens that have occurred in the United States in recent years, including horrific tragedies in Newtown, Connecticut, Parkland, Florida, and Uvalde, Texas. According to the nonprofit KFF, guns became the leading cause of death among children in the United States in 2020 and 2021.
