(CLO) On February 5, Swedish police said there was no evidence of an "ideological motive" behind the mass shooting at an educational center in Orebro on February 4, and warned against misinformation spreading on social media about the deadliest shooting in the Nordic country.
The incident at Risbergska school in the city of Orebro left at least 11 people dead (including the perpetrator) and many injured. The school area is still blocked off by police, while people laid flowers and lit candles in memory of the victims.
"We would like to clarify that, according to current investigation and intelligence, there is no indication that the attacker acted for ideological reasons," police said in a statement on their official website. They also said the suspect, who was among those killed, acted alone and had no previous history of being tracked by police.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described it as the "most tragic day" in Sweden's history, while King Carl XVI Gustav sent his condolences to the victims and their families. Flags at government buildings in Orebro, the parliament building and the royal palace in Stockholm were flown at half-mast in a sign of mourning.
The Orebro municipality has pledged to support the victims, school staff and local residents. "Our mission is to care for those affected and reassure a community that is confused and grieving," said City Manager Peter Larsson.
Many of the students at adult education centres in Sweden are immigrants learning Swedish and getting qualifications to help them find work. Police insist there is no threat to the education system or immigrant communities.
Despite a wave of gang violence in Sweden, school shootings remain rare. According to the National Council for Crime Prevention, there were seven deadly school shootings between 2010 and 2022, resulting in 10 deaths.
