Vinamilk is the only dairy company in Asia to be honored in the Green Leadership category at the Asia Responsible Business Awards. Specifically, the award was given for the Vinamilk Pathways to Dairy Net Zero 2050 action program.
The only dairy company in Asia to be awarded for Green Leadership
Launched in 2011, the Asia Responsibility Enterprise Award (AREA) is one of the most prestigious international awards in Asia, honoring businesses that excel in implementing social responsibility and sustainable development. In 2024, the award will be held for the first time in Vietnam with the theme "Building Towards an ESG-Driven Future" to emphasize the importance of sustainable business, applying ESG in a practical way and creating a more sustainable future.
In its first participation in the award, Vinamilk was honored in the “Green Leadership” category with its strategies and efforts to implement the Net Zero 2050 goal and was the only Asian dairy company to receive the award in this category.
Mr. Le Hoang Minh, Production Executive Director of Vinamik received the certificate trophy for the Green Leadership category of the AREA Awards
It can be seen that the sustainable development program requires awareness and determination from the leadership level, followed by implementation throughout each employee in the organization to reach the destination. Therefore, "Green Leadership" is always a notable category.
This year, climate change and Net Zero are hot topics that receive special attention. That is also the reason why the “Green Leadership” category is built according to criteria such as: Efficient use of resources, measures to reduce emissions, application of green technology and sustainable development initiatives… Thereby, honoring Asian businesses with many typical and outstanding practices in sustainable development strategies.
“Net Zero” – from commitment to implementation strategy
The action program “Vinamilk Pathways to Dairy Net Zero 2050” was announced in 2023, emphasizing the commitment and roadmap to achieve the goal of net zero emissions (Net Zero) by 2050. In the first year after launching the roadmap, Vinamilk's initial results include owning 3 units that achieved carbon neutrality according to the international standard PAS 2060:2014, including Nghe An Dairy Factory, Nghe An Dairy Farm and Vietnam Beverage Factory. The total amount of emissions neutralized by Vinamilk is 21,000 tons of CO2e (equivalent to more than 2 million trees planted).
To date, Vinamilk is the first and only dairy company in Vietnam with carbon neutral factories and farms.
Many years ago, “greenhouse gas emission management” appeared in the company’s Sustainability Report as one of the 11 key aspects of sustainable development. Since 2021, Vinamilk has pioneered greenhouse gas inventories according to the international standard ISO14064 for factories, thereby conducting emission assessments and developing optimal reduction plans. To date, the company has said it is ready to conduct inventory reports in scope 3.
The system of 14 Vinamilk farms across the country is currently applying many solutions on sustainable agriculture and green energy.
The greenhouse gas inventory helps Vinamilk form a database and standardize “greening” activities in the production and livestock chain. Vinamilk’s emission reduction and energy-saving technologies meet international standards such as: ISO 50001 energy certification, ISO 14001 environmental certification (for factories), European organic certification (Organic), GlobalG.AP Good Agricultural Practices certification (for farms)… and recently, PAS 2060:2014 Carbon Neutral certification.
“ In fact, despite applying many synchronous solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is very difficult for a livestock and production enterprise to completely cut emissions and achieve the Net Zero target. Therefore, Vinamilk has oriented to plant trees to absorb carbon very early. After completing the 1 million trees fund, we implemented the Vinamilk Net Zero Forest project to form carbon sinks in the future and further protect and develop forests for Vietnam ,” said Mr. Le Hoang Minh - Executive Director of Production and Head of the Net Zero project of Vinamilk.
Tree planting activities carried out by Vinamilk all call for the participation of employees, youth union members, the community...
Specifically, the enterprise is investing about 25 billion VND in projects such as Tree planting activities towards Net Zero 2023-2027; Enclosing and regenerating 25 hectares of Ca Mau mangrove forest; Protecting and developing forests in Laos (under the Lao-Jagro project)... and is continuing to research many other forest planting projects.
According to Vinamilk's commitment, the company will cut emissions by 15% by 2027, 55% by 2035 and move towards net zero emissions by 2050. This challenging goal is being strongly promoted by Vietnam's leading dairy company, creating leadership and positive impact, contributing to Vietnam's common journey towards Net Zero as committed at COP26.
