According to VNA correspondent at the UN, the forum was attended by President of the UN General Assembly Csaba Kőrösi, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, several Presidents, Prime Ministers, Deputy Prime Ministers, 20 Ministers and representatives of UN member countries. The Vietnamese interdisciplinary delegation was led by Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN.
In his opening remarks at the forum, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that the multidimensional crisis is increasing inequality and causing severe negative impacts on the poorest and most vulnerable countries, threatening the implementation of the SDGs. The Secretary-General called on G20 countries to quickly come up with a stimulus package to implement the SDGs worth at least 500 billion USD/year to scale up long-term and concessional finance for all countries in need.
The heads of UN agencies and countries discussed concrete measures to enhance financing for development, including assessing monetary and fiscal policy options to address urgent issues while ensuring long-term goals, promoting sustainable debt management and addressing structural issues of sovereign debt, promoting international tax cooperation, ensuring financing for sustainable industrial transformation and climate change response, enhancing the role of multilateral investment banks and private investment in increasing concessional funding for developing countries. Representatives of countries also called for restructuring international financial institutions, ensuring food security to achieve the SDGs and unanimously adopted a Political Declaration emphasizing the commitment to ensuring financing for development.
Speaking at the forum, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang suggested promoting the role of multilateralism in addressing the current global multidimensional crisis to ensure financial resources for the implementation of the SDGs. The Ambassador called on the international community to make further efforts to narrow the financial gap between countries and suggested that the G7 and G20 countries accelerate the implementation of commitments to support developing countries in accessing preferential financial resources for the SDGs and responding to climate change.
In addition, the Ambassador also emphasized the need to share experiences and information on new laws such as global minimum taxes, carbon credits, as well as technology transfer and capacity building for developing countries in digital and green transformation. Developing countries also need to improve their capacity to effectively mobilize domestic resources, link SDGs to development strategies, improve tax administration, ensure public debt safety and national financial security. The Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam is ready to contribute to the common efforts in implementing the 2030 Agenda, through promoting South-South cooperation and tripartite cooperation.
On the sidelines of the forum, the Vietnamese delegation actively participated and contributed to sideline dialogue events such as the International Labor Organization (ILO) Workshop on Employment and Social Protection for a Just Transition, the Workshop on Global Development Initiatives, and meetings and exchanges with a number of partners.
