Mr. Zhanat Momynkulov, Orientalist and Arab expert, made some remarkable comments on the situation surrounding Syria.

According to Zhanat, Syria is at the epicenter of global changes affecting international politics. “The Bashar al-Assad dynasty of military elites, which has relied on external support to rule the country for more than half a century, has lost power. It seems that countries such as Israel, Iran, Russia, Arab countries, Turkey and the United States have come to a consensus on Assad’s departure.” The rapid changes taking place in Syria, at the intersection of regional and global conflicts, could significantly affect the political map of the Middle East.
In the past, the US and Israel wanted to see President Bashar al-Assad's government in Syria weak and predictable. But today, Mr. al-Assad's hold on power has become unprofitable even for the leader's allies in Syria.
Russia, after withdrawing some of its troops to Ukraine, has effectively abandoned Syria. Israel has severely weakened Hezbollah and Hamas. With Iran increasingly weak, Assad finds himself alone. Turkey, meanwhile, has seized the opportunity to strengthen its regional voice by leading and supporting Syrian opposition groups such as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. According to Zhanat, perhaps a new era of unity and regrouping is beginning in the Sunni community of the Muslim world.
“These changes will also affect international politics,” Zhanat said. “With the re-emergence of Mr. Trump in American politics, the positions of Israel, Türkiye and the Arab monarchies in the Middle East are being strengthened. The role and influence of the Sunni Muslim majority is increasing, and this could become an important factor in global politics.”
In this context, “the future of Syria will depend on the ability of the various armed groups to reach a consensus. Kurds, Shiites, Sunnis and Christians must agree on the federalization of the country. This is the only way to avoid religious conflict and achieve stability. The new Syrian elite has no other choice. Salafis like Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, have changed their image and adapted to the new political reality.
These groups are now forming conventional armed forces, engaging in negotiations and softening their previously radical stance. However, experts do not rule out the possibility of a new wave of radicalism, especially in the electronic sphere.”
The expert believes that the overthrow of President al-Assad will open a new chapter in the history of Syria and the entire region. “Time will tell whether Syria can move towards a comprehensive political system. However, to do so, it is important for the Syrian elite to abandon autocratic practices and reach a mutual understanding.”
