Hundreds of fishing boats of Nhon Ly commune (Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh) continuously "hit the jackpot" with anchovies, taking turns going in and out of the commune's fishing port to "sell luck" at the beginning of the year.
Fishing boats specializing in nearshore fishing of fishermen in Nhon Ly fishing village (Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh) had a big catch of anchovies in the first days of the year.
Fisherman Huynh Cong Chinh, owner of a purse seine boat in Ly Hoa village (Nhon Ly commune) said that he and many other boat owners in the commune decided to choose the 4th day of Tet to open the sea, but unexpectedly in the morning they caught a lot of anchovies.
Since before the Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025 until now, there has been no shrimp and anchovies at sea, everyone thought that this year would be a bad shrimp and anchovy season. However, on the first day of the year, many boats have harvested a lot of anchovies and anchovies.
"For fishermen, a big catch like this on the first trip of the year is a "blessing from the sea", a good sign for the fishing industry all year round," said Mr. Chinh.
Ms. Ho Thi Thu Hien, a fishmonger in Nhon Ly commune, said: "On average, each fishing boat at the beginning of the year earns 20-30 million VND from anchovies. Many people in the commune and tourists have gone down to the fishing wharf to buy anchovies to eat, because during Tet everyone is tired of meat, so fresh anchovies cooked in soup or made into pancakes have become a delicious dish for the three Tet meals."
According to locals, the boats usually go out to sea for a few hours, and if they catch a catch, they immediately return to shore to sell. The boats go out to sea to fish from early morning until late at night.
Fisherman Nguyen Nguyen (60 years old) said that the sea area of Nhon Ly commune mainly has anchovies and shrimp.
"The wind has been strong these past few days so fishermen haven't been able to catch any fish. They've only been out at sea for the past 5-7 days. This year, there's a good anchovy season, but there's less shrimp," said Mr. Nguyen.
According to records, on average each ship arriving at port usually brings back 15 - 20 crates of anchovies. The selling price ranges from 150,000 - 200,000 VND/crash (a crate of anchovies weighs about 10 - 12 kg).
At the fishing port, people stand in large numbers to welcome each anchovy fishing boat to the shore. As soon as the boat arrives, the anchovies are quickly bought up by traders. The anchovies are then salted or dried for sale.
