Mr. Phuong, a farmer in My Hung commune, Cu Chi district (HCMC), both raises dairy cows and operates a cooperative group to purchase milk for farmers. Every day, his cooperative group purchases about 14 tons of milk from farmers.
Raising dairy cows in a new way
Mr. Chau Chi Phuong (Phu My Hung Commune, Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City) used to be a worker. After trying to raise dairy cows, he realized that this job brought a stable income and had more development opportunities than a salaried job. Mr. Phuong decided to invest in buying breeding cows, building barns and starting a business with a herd of dairy cows.

Instead of raising dairy cows in the traditional way, Mr. Phuong devoted himself to learning new knowledge to apply to his model. He used sex-segregated semen to breed cows to produce generations of cows with superior productivity and milk quality. Regarding food, Mr. Phuong balanced the use of industrial feed and natural grass.
“There are many different ways to care for dairy cows, depending on each person. However, the choice of food must be appropriate, especially grass must be provided sufficiently for the cows, do not overuse industrial food,” said Mr. Phuong.
Up to now, his dairy farming model has applied mechanization in the production of green fodder such as: land preparation, fertilization, care and grass harvesting. The barns are equipped with automatic watering systems. After harvesting, the milk is cooled using the most advanced milk cooling system, meeting the standards of major dairy companies in the world.
“I often meet with Dutch farmers to learn and exchange experiences. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to access more knowledge than other farmers, so when I learn, I share it with my colleagues,” said Mr. Phuong.

Mr. Phuong currently owns a herd of just over 20 cows, which produce over 300kg of milk each day. However, his main job is to operate the Phu My Hung Dairy Cooperative with 7 members.
Every day, the cooperative buys about 14 tons of fresh milk from farmers. The cooperative is a large supplier of fresh milk to Dutch Lady Company.

Farmers unite to help each other get rich
According to statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Farmers’ Association, Mr. Phuong earns a profit of about 360 million VND per year and creates jobs for about 15 workers. Of these, 9 are regular workers with a salary of 7-9 million VND per month. Seasonal workers working for him also earn 400-500 thousand VND per day.

In 2022, Mr. Phuong was awarded a certificate of merit by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for his outstanding achievements in the movement of good farmers and businessmen uniting to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty in the period 2017-2021. Mr. Phuong also won the title of Good Farmer and Businessman at the City level for 3 consecutive years (2021-2023).
Farmers like Mr. Phuong are making great contributions to the development of Ho Chi Minh City’s agricultural sector. New thinking, new ways of doing things, and the shift from agricultural production thinking to agricultural economics help increase farmers’ income.
Currently, the agricultural sector of Ho Chi Minh City continues to shift from inefficient crops and animals to agricultural models with higher incomes. The city’s livestock sector has also made changes to adapt to urban agriculture.
Over the past years, the number of dairy cows in Ho Chi Minh City has decreased sharply. If in 2016, the total number of dairy cows in Ho Chi Minh City was 113,744, by 2020 the total number of cows had decreased to only 72,309 and by 2024 the total number of dairy cows in the city was 33,225.
The reduction of dairy cows is in line with the development orientation of the City's livestock industry. In the process, ineffective small-scale livestock models must end, and more effective models continue to be invested in and developed, bringing good income to livestock farmers.

The orientation of Ho Chi Minh City is to maintain qualified concentrated livestock farms, encourage the gradual reduction of small-scale livestock farms, and increase medium and large-scale livestock farms. Promote the development of high-tech, organic, and circular production models; quickly convert low-efficiency land use types to high-efficiency land use types such as high-quality breeding production.
The city simultaneously implements solutions to maintain the scale of the female dairy herd at 35,600 cows. Special focus is on improving milk productivity based on the application of high technology. Livestock farming areas are concentrated in the districts: Cu Chi, Hoc Mon, Binh Chanh.
