In the last days of 2024, shrimp farmers in Thai Thuy district (Thai Binh province) were happy because shrimp had a good harvest and good prices.
In the shrimp crop at the end of 2024, Mr. Dao Van Sinh, Nam Hai village, Thai Do commune (Thai Thuy district, Thai Binh province) harvested 6 tons of white-leg shrimp.
He shared: This year, shrimp prices are good. In mid-December, I sold shrimp at the pond for 320,000 VND/kg (30 shrimp/kg), an increase of 100,000 VND/kg compared to previous years. The price has never been this high. After deducting expenses, this crop alone made a profit of more than 1 billion VND.
I think shrimp prices will continue to increase before and after Tet, creating momentum for farmers to be excited about the new farming season. I have just renovated the pond and continued to breed more than 300,000 shrimp; if the weather is favorable and disease prevention and control are good, around February 2025 I will harvest the first shrimp crop of the year of At Ty.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thien, Deputy Director of Thai Do Commune Agricultural Service Production and Trading Cooperative, said: The aquaculture area of the cooperative is more than 270 hectares, of which more than 20 hectares are for high-tech shrimp farming, mainly white-leg shrimp farming. The output reaches 6.7 tons/ha, the average price is 200,000 VND/kg, shrimp farmers earn more than 1.2 billion VND/ha/year.
Although winter-spring white-leg shrimp farming is difficult, it is the most economically efficient compared to other farming seasons of the year. To help shrimp farmers raise shrimp effectively, the cooperative has coordinated with relevant agencies to strengthen inspection, supervision, environmental and disease management.
Leaving Thai Do commune, we went to Thai Thuong commune - one of the communes with the largest high-tech shrimp farming area in the district.
Sharing the joy of good shrimp prices, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Su, Bich Du village said: After more than 3 months of farming, in mid-December 2024 I started harvesting winter shrimp.
This shrimp crop was a great success, more than 10 tons of shrimp with a size of 50 - 60 shrimp/kg cost 260,000 - 300,000 VND/kg, I earned nearly 3 billion VND. Raising shrimp with high technology, I can take the initiative in temperature, control the environment, limit diseases and the density is also higher, so the profit is more than 1 billion VND/year.

Thanks to the high price of winter shrimp, shrimp farmers have offset part of their investment costs and losses caused by disease.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Bach Dang village, Thai Thuong commune shared: Promoting the locality's strengths of having an alluvial area suitable for shrimp farming, I invested in 4 ponds, releasing the seeds in many batches, each batch 15 - 20 days apart, with the purpose of spacing out the harvest days, and many batches to serve the Tet market.
It is expected that during the Lunar New Year, I will sell 8-12 tons of shrimp, with an average price of 300,000 VND/kg, I will earn more than 3 billion VND; minus production costs (seeds, feed, labor, electricity, medicine...), I will earn about 1.5 billion VND. The success of the winter shrimp crop has helped me to offset the investment capital lost due to the impact of storm No. 3, creating momentum for the next crop.
Thai Thuy district has 2,600 hectares of brackish and saltwater aquaculture, of which 576 hectares are for black tiger shrimp farming, 94 hectares for high-tech white-leg shrimp farming; the remaining area is for raising crabs, fish and other seafood.
According to the review of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, before Tet, there were 16 hectares of white-leg shrimp raised according to the industrial model in Thai Do and Thai Thuong communes to serve the Tet market, with an estimated output of more than 100 tons.
Currently, white-leg shrimp weighing 70 pieces/kg costs from 170,000 - 190,000 VND/kg, shrimp weighing 50 pieces/kg costs 240,000 - 260,000 VND/kg, shrimp weighing 30 pieces/kg costs 320,000 VND/kg.
Shrimp prices are higher than in previous years because after storm No. 3, many households reduced their farming areas, so market supply decreased, which somewhat affected shrimp prices. At the end of the year, the retail market consumed strongly, and seafood processing facilities prepared for Tet, so the supply was very large.
Mr. Le Van Hoan, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thai Thuy district (Thai Binh province) said: The current shrimp price helps farmers have relatively high profits, this is the motivation for farmers to boldly invest in re-production.
However, shrimp farming also faces many risks due to diseases and weather. Farmers need to choose a reputable supplier of shrimp seeds, quality shrimp seeds that have passed quarantine, tested negative for dangerous diseases before stocking; determine the appropriate stocking time and harvest time to ensure efficiency; raise according to the correct process, invest in infrastructure that meets technical requirements to avoid diseases and achieve high yields.
