According to UNHCR, by the end of last year, 117.3 million people had been displaced from their homes, and by the end of April this year, that number had risen to around 120 million, nearly three times the figure in 2012 and a 12-year high. Conflict remains the main cause of mass displacement, especially in Sudan, Ukraine, Syria, Gaza, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Myanmar.

The conflict in Syria is the cause of the world's largest refugee crisis, with 13.8 million people forced to flee within and outside the country, the UNHCR said.

Since the conflict broke out in April 2023 in Sudan, more than 9 million people have been displaced, bringing the total number of people displaced by the end of 2023 to nearly 11 million.

The UNHCR report also shows that of the 117.3 million people displaced by the end of 2023; 68.3 million are internally displaced and the number of people in need of international protection has increased to 43.4 million.
