According to doctors at the Nuclear Medicine and Oncology Center, Bach Mai Hospital, the rate of patients diagnosed with breast cancer is getting younger. Many people are diagnosed with the disease at a relatively young age.

Detecting stage 2 breast cancer, female patient NTT (29 years old, Hanoi) was shocked. She shared: I thought I was young and in normal health, so I did not go for regular health check-ups. Recently, I discovered an unusual tumor in my left breast, it gradually grew larger and was a bit painful, so I went to the hospital for a check-up.

Ms. T thought breast cancer only occurred in the elderly, and did not think that this disease would come to her.

According to Master, Doctor Le Van Long, Center for Nuclear Medicine and Oncology, Bach Mai Hospital: In the unfortunate situation of having breast cancer, the patient is also somewhat lucky that the cancer was detected in the early stages.

The female patient underwent total mastectomy, axillary lymph node dissection, followed by left breast reconstruction surgery and targeted drug therapy, such as dual anti-HER2 therapy.

"The breast that was operated on after shaping is very symmetrical and can reach 90% compared to the other breast. Currently, the patient's condition is stable, almost completely cured," Dr. Long shared.

According to world statistics, breast cancer is becoming more common and younger. GLOBOCAN 2022 data shows that breast cancer used to be behind other cancers, but has now "risen" to the second position in the world, and is the leading position in Vietnam.

Every year, the world records about 2 million cases of the disease, and in Vietnam alone, nearly 25,000 cases were recorded in 2022.

Through this case, the doctor also gave recommendations to prevent breast cancer, screening plays a very important role. Currently, the rate of periodic health check-ups in Vietnam is quite low, especially in the young group. They often think that young people have less risk of breast cancer. However, the rate of breast cancer patients tends to be younger, there are patients in their 20s who have breast cancer.

The doctor also said that the cure rate of breast cancer if detected early can reach more than 90%, even up to 98%. Meanwhile, for the group of patients detected at a late stage, the 5-year survival rate is only less than 20%.

To screen for breast cancer, you only need to do simple tests such as ultrasound, or self-examine yourself. If you find any unusual lumps or tumors, you need to go to a specialized medical facility for examination and early detection.

For patients who come to the hospital at a late stage, the cost of treatment will be much more expensive. Patients will not be able to use early stage treatment methods that can cure them, but will only be treated with the goal of prolonging the patient's life.
