Many education experts believe that regardless of the university admission method, for students with real ability, the chance of being admitted early is still very high.
The draft Circular on regulations for university and college admissions in preschool education of the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates that the early admission quota is determined by the school but does not exceed 20% of the quota of each training major and group of majors.
This draft is receiving attention from many students in Nghe An.
Candidates are concerned about early admission
Phan Huu Lam, a 12A2 student at Vinh University High School for the Gifted, wishes to apply for admission to the International Economics major at the National Economics University.
"Previously, I was quite confident in passing my first choice through early admission methods. However, when I read the draft of the new admission regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, I was very surprised and worried," Lam said.
Although the chance of "getting into" the 20% for early admission will be less, Lam said he still prioritizes the ability assessment test and thinking assessment for admission, followed by the graduation exam score.
Therefore, Lam reviewed all subjects and took extra classes in Math, English, Physics and Literature. The time spent on high school graduation exams increased, so he temporarily put aside extracurricular activities and school clubs to focus on studying.
Similarly, Nguyen Nhat Vy, a 12D student at Le Viet Thuat High School, also spent time focusing on the Aptitude Test and preparing many options for university admission.
Nhat Vy was quite confident that she would soon have a direct admission to the Foreign Trade University, because she was an excellent student for all 3 years of high school, had an IELTS certificate of 7.0, and in previous years, the school reserved 70% of its quota for early admission.
When receiving information that the Ministry would “tighten” the early admission quota to only 20%, Nhat Vy shared that she was really worried. Currently, students not only have to take the high school graduation exam but also many other exams if they want to have more opportunities to enter university. Therefore, if they focus too much on the exam, Vy believes that her studies will be affected.
“In my opinion, the Ministry should not impose quotas on universities but should expand different admission methods, as long as the quality of candidates is guaranteed. In addition, the Ministry should reconsider the draft to only reserve 20% of the early admission quota. This will make it more difficult for students from normal schools because normally, when considering talent, universities will give more priority to students from specialized schools,” Nhat Vy expressed.
Still using many admission methods
Early admission has been implemented in many universities in the past 6-7 years.
Specifically, instead of only considering admission based on the traditional method of high school graduation exam scores, direct admission is applied to excellent national and international students (according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training).
Schools have many other admission methods such as IELTS, ACT/SAT foreign language certificates.
Recently, the fact that many universities organize their own exams such as aptitude tests and thinking tests has made many candidates decide to choose these methods instead of graduation exam scores or admission based on academic transcript scores (usually grades 10, 11 and semester 1 of grade 12).
At Nam Dan 1 High School, teacher Dinh Anh Tuan - homeroom teacher of class 12A1 said that although it is a selective class, the students' abilities are among the top in the school, but very few students choose to take the high school graduation exam.
Instead, 100% of the students in the class chose to take the exam to assess their thinking, abilities, or foreign language certificates. This is also normal because in recent years, the quotas of schools for graduation exam scores have been increasingly "shrinking" and the admission scores are often very high.
Students choosing other options will help them increase their chances of being admitted.
In previous years, there were more opportunities for students to be considered for early admission, but with the new draft, their opportunities have narrowed, competition will also be "fierce" and graduation scores are expected to be higher than previous years.
As a school in a rural area with difficult conditions, students at Nguyen Sy Sach High School, Thanh Chuong District, have few opportunities to take IELTS and SAT exams, although many of them have good academic ability and test-taking skills.
Right from grade 10 and 11, the school and teachers have advised and provided strategies for students to approach and participate in separate exams such as ability assessment and thinking assessment of universities.
Mr. Nguyen Sy Quy - Nguyen Sy Sach High School said that this is the first year to organize the High School Graduation Exam according to the 2018 General Education Program, so the school is closely following the exam matrix and sample exam questions of the Ministry to analyze the questions.
The school also organizes professional activities between schools, combining experienced teachers to create sources of questions. Because it is a new program, the source of learning materials is limited, teachers mainly have to use textbooks and exercise books to teach students.
Although the preparation was quite early, the Draft Admissions was issued when there was only one semester left in the school year, making both teachers and students worried.
The concerns of students and teachers in Nghe An are well-founded because in recent years, the admission scores of top universities have been fluctuating unexpectedly. There are even departments and majors of some schools with exam scores above 29 that have not yet been admitted.
Meanwhile, if considered by other methods, students can proactively apply to many universities and have the opportunity to be admitted early.
On the university side, the Ministry's request for opinions on the draft to only reserve 20% of the admission quota for early consideration also leaves concerns, especially for lower-ranked schools.
Many opinions say that when universities are given autonomy, schools must be proactive in the admission process.
However, Associate Professor, Dr. Cao Danh Chinh - Vice Principal of Vinh University of Technical Education said that this change does not take away the opportunities of candidates when applying for university admission because regardless of the admission method or time, candidates still have many opportunities to enter university.
Candidates can use their aptitude test scores, thinking test scores, or combined IeLTS/SAT certificates to register for the general admission round of the Ministry of Education and Training. Therefore, instead of worrying, students should calmly choose their strengths in the admission method to review and get the best results.
To create conditions for candidates to have the opportunity to choose a university or major that they love, instead of facing the stress and uncertainty of the high school graduation exam, many students and teachers are actively choosing review methods that suit their abilities and strengths.
Many education experts believe that, regardless of the admission method, for students with real ability, the chance of them being admitted early is still very high./.
According to Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son, many experts have suggested eliminating early admission, the Ministry will consider this, consider whether to shorten this rate or eliminate early admission to create fairness.
