According to a statement issued by the TSC, the meeting between al-Burhan and Kamel touched on Sudan-Egypt relations and the challenges facing the two countries. General al-Burhan praised Egypt’s leadership in supporting and assisting Sudan, within the framework of the historical and friendly ties that bind the two countries.
He expressed his deep gratitude to the Egyptian government and people, under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, for providing basic services to the Sudanese people taking refuge in the neighboring country.
For his part, General Abbas Kamel affirmed Egypt's support for Sudan's security and stability, expressing hope that the conflict in the neighboring country will end quickly to ease the suffering of its people.
The meeting between Mr. al-Burhan and Mr. Kamel was also attended by the Director of Sudan's Intelligence Service, General Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal.
Last week, in an official statement, the TSC announced its intention to send a government delegation to Cairo on August 22 to discuss the implementation of the Jeddah Declaration. The TSC’s decision comes after recent talks with the US government led by Special Envoy to Sudan Tom Perriello.
However, the TSC delegation did not arrive in Egypt as scheduled. Signed in May 2023, the Jeddah Declaration calls on both sides of Sudan’s war to allow in much-needed humanitarian aid, following attacks on aid operations in Africa’s third-largest country. It also calls for the restoration of electricity, water and other basic services, and the withdrawal of security forces from hospitals.
In a recent meeting with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on August 20, Egyptian President El-Sisi affirmed Cairo's interest in achieving a ceasefire, protecting the resources and lives of the Sudanese people, and protecting Sudan's state institutions and sovereignty.
President El-Sisi also stressed the need for joint regional and international efforts to provide all possible support to end the political crisis and humanitarian tragedy that the Sudanese people are suffering.
According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, since April 2023, Egypt has taken in more than 500,000 Sudanese refugees fleeing the conflict, in addition to the 5 million Sudanese already residing in Egypt. Cairo has also hosted several summits to resolve the Sudan crisis.
Sudan has been suffering one of the world's worst humanitarian crises since conflict broke out in April 2023 between Sudanese government troops and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The fighting has so far displaced about 20% of Sudan's population, while tens of thousands have died. More than 25 million people across Sudan - more than 50% of the country's population - face severe famine.
