To increase the value of crops, especially durian - a tree with high economic value today, many households in Long Ho district have applied smart irrigation systems to help reduce costs and increase production efficiency. This is also one of the effective solutions to cope with drought and salinity in agricultural production.

In recent years, many farmers have boldly converted and applied automatic irrigation systems in agricultural production and have brought positive results. In particular, installing automatic irrigation systems on fruit trees not only helps save time but also reduces the amount of irrigation water, fertilizers, and pesticides compared to traditional methods, ensuring that crops are always provided with enough water needed for each stage of development.

Accordingly, implementing Resolution No. 03-NQ/TU dated December 1, 2021 of the Vinh Long Provincial Party Committee on developing high-tech agriculture in the period of 2021-2025, the Department of Economics and Infrastructure of Long Ho district has deployed a model of applying smart irrigation technology on durian trees in Dong Phu commune. With funding from science and technology, the district has supported farmers to invest in building smart irrigation and spraying models.

Specifically, the irrigation and spraying system controlled by a smartphone includes two functions: drip irrigation and spray irrigation for durian trees; spraying pesticides and foliar fertilizers for durian trees. The drip irrigation system includes drippers under the durian tree. The spraying system for spraying pesticides and foliar fertilizers includes nozzles installed around the durian tree canopy.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tuy - Economic and Infrastructure Department of Long Ho district, said that due to the impact of climate change, the situation of drought and salinity is increasingly complicated, the government and farmers in 4 island communes of Long Ho district have proactively taken response solutions to protect and develop fruit orchards to increase farmers' income, contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality. In particular, the smart irrigation system is a model of applying high technology to fruit orchard cultivation to help save water and reduce labor costs, which is one of the effective solutions to cope with drought and salinity in agricultural production.

According to Mr. Tuy, when applying smart irrigation and spraying technology, farmers save 70-80% of water, foliar fertilizers, and pesticides, control the operating time of the system, and reduce spraying time by about 97.9% compared to spraying using traditional sprayers. In addition, the rate of diseases and pests destroyed increases by about 29%, increasing fruit yield on durian trees by 10-20%, minimizing exposure to fertilizers and pesticides that are harmful to the health of sprayers; minimizing the risk of environmental pollution.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ut Lam - Head of the Farmers' Association of Phu Thanh 3 Hamlet, has 14 hectares of durian land and has now deployed an irrigation and spraying system on 8 hectares. Mr. Ut Lam shared: “Since applying this automatic system, the work has become much easier. Instead of watering and spraying all day, now it only takes 15-30 minutes to finish the whole garden. Saving water and effort. Just sit at home, set up the program and press the control button and the irrigation system will work. Every day, if it is sunny, you have to water twice, each time for 15 minutes. The installation cost is only over 1 million VND/hectare”.

Many farmers say that automatic irrigation systems are really highly effective and save money in many ways. Therefore, investing in an automatic irrigation system is a solution that many farmers apply to increase productivity and quality in agricultural production, especially in the current conditions of climate change, salinity intrusion, and drought.

Currently, farmers have boldly invested in the model of automating sprinkler and drip irrigation systems for gardens such as longan, rambutan, jackfruit, vegetables, etc. Accordingly, the Department of Economics and Infrastructure in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the district, the Farmers' Association and the People's Committees of communes and towns in Long Ho district have inspected, evaluated, accepted and effectively promoted the model to people in the district for application.

Mr. Ha Huynh Phong - Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Dong Phu commune, said that currently, 7 households in the commune have deployed smart irrigation and watering systems with 50% support from the district's budget. Compared to the cost of hiring workers to water the plants every day, the irrigation system will help save a lot of costs. Automatic irrigation, fertilization, and spraying are much more effective than wearing a sprayer and spraying pressure from the base up as in the traditional way because it can avoid chemicals coming into contact with the body, directly affecting the health of farmers.

“In the agricultural production restructuring plan, the commune restructures towards agricultural economic development, focusing on developing high-quality agricultural products, ensuring food safety, meeting export conditions, adapting to climate change and protecting the environment. The smart irrigation and spraying model is a new model applying 4.0 technology and bringing efficiency. The Commune Farmers' Association is ready to share with neighboring people to see and replicate the model,” said Mr. Phong.
