Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, accompanied by a delegation of senior New Zealand business leaders.
Before his visit to Vietnam, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon shared about the relationship between the two countries.
“Vietnam is a rising star in Southeast Asia, one of the fastest growing economies in the region. This year, our two countries celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations. My visit will energize our relationship, strengthen bilateral trade and open doors to more opportunities for businesses...”, said Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
The New Zealand Prime Minister shared that trade between the two countries has grown by 40% in the past 5 years, but there is still much room for growth. He expressed his commitment to working with Vietnamese leaders to reach a two-way trade turnover of 3 billion USD by 2026.

The New Zealand leader commented that with more than two decades of economic growth of over 5% per year and a population of more than 100 million people, Vietnam is a market with great opportunities for New Zealand, especially in education and providing high-quality food and beverages.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and New Zealand Prime Minister will hold talks to discuss cooperation and measures to strengthen the Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will also deliver an important speech at the ASEAN Future Forum. His speech in Hanoi comes as New Zealand celebrates 50 years of relations with ASEAN.
“New Zealand’s future security and prosperity are closely linked to the success of ASEAN and its member states. We are working to strengthen cooperation and deepen our relationship with ASEAN,” said Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
Regarding Vietnam - New Zealand relations, New Zealand always affirms its importance to relations with Vietnam; considering Vietnam an important factor in its policy towards the Asia - Pacific region. The two countries established diplomatic relations on June 19, 1975.
As of February 2025, Vietnam is New Zealand's 12th largest trading partner, of which Vietnam is the 12th largest exporter to the New Zealand market and the 18th largest importer of New Zealand.
New Zealand is Vietnam's 41st largest trading partner (ranked 41st in exports and 37th in imports). Two-way trade turnover has increased steadily over the years.
New Zealand provides Vietnam with a stable source of ODA that increases year by year. Educational cooperation is one of the prominent areas of cooperation.
In security and defense, New Zealand supports Vietnam in organizing training courses on counter-terrorism, criminal and investigative techniques, and prevention of money laundering and high-tech crimes.
Agriculture is an important and potential area of cooperation in the bilateral relationship. Vietnam has opened its market to commercial potatoes, frozen beef, kiwifruit, apples, pumpkins, and strawberries from New Zealand.
New Zealand has licensed mangoes, dragon fruit, rambutans, lemons and grapefruits from Vietnam. New Zealand is proposing to open its market to honey, pears, venison and elk. Vietnam has proposed to open its market to longan, lychee and cut flowers.
The ASEAN Future Forum 2025 took place from February 25-26 in Hanoi with the theme: “Building a united, inclusive and resilient ASEAN in a volatile world”. The forum had 12 activities, including 1 high-level session, 5 plenary sessions, 1 gala dinner, 1 working lunch and other activities.
It is expected that 3 high-ranking leaders of countries, including the Prime Minister of Malaysia, the President of Timor Leste, and the Prime Minister of New Zealand, will attend. About 10 deputy prime ministers, ministers or equivalent, and the ASEAN Secretary General are expected to attend the forum.
