This is also the event in which Vietnamese Sports hopes to win a medal. A total of 10 weightlifters will compete in the finals of this weight class, including world number 1 weightlifter Li Fabin. Born in 1993, Li Fabin is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic champion, 2-time world champion and 4-time Asian champion. At the recent world championship, Li Fabin won the gold medal with a total lift of 308kg (141kg snatch, 167kg clean and jerk).
Trinh Van Vinh returns to the Asian Games arena on the afternoon of October 1.
Just before the competition, La Fabin adjusted his registered weight to 137kg and was the athlete who registered the highest weight among the 10 athletes competing in the final. Before Vinh competed, only Ceniza John Febuar (Philippines) succeeded in the first snatch of 128kg while the other athletes succeeded at lower weights. Confidently entering the competition, Trinh Van Vinh succeeded in the first snatch at 128kg. After Trinh Van Vinh, the weightlifter from Saudi Arabia succeeded in the second snatch at 128kg. The weightlifter from Indonesia also succeeded at this weight.
This situation forced Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan to increase the weight to 129kg and he succeeded at this weight in his first snatch. Other weightlifters also continuously increased the weight to avoid early elimination, including North Korean weightlifter Kim Pak Myongjin who successfully snatched 131kg. Trinh Van Vinh also increased the weight to 131kg. Unfortunately, he was not successful at this weight. Meanwhile, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan also pushed the weight to 132kg but he was not successful. Trinh Van Vinh was also not successful at this weight. Notably, on the third try, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan succeeded at the 132kg snatch.
Although he did not win a medal because his opponent was too strong, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan competed successfully this afternoon.
At the recent world championships, China introduced another talent, Ding Hongjie. This athlete won a bronze medal with a total weight of 301kg. However, in all 3 snatches, this weightlifter failed at 133kg. The race became even more intense because Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan was competing for 3rd place in the snatch with Filipino athlete Ceniza Febuar. However, the Filipino weightlifter succeeded at 134kg, pushing Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan to 4th place. Immediately after that, North Korean weightlifter Pak Myongjin raised the weight to 136kg and he succeeded in the 3rd snatch. Before Li Fabin appeared, the North Korean weightlifter led the snatch.
Appearing last in the 10 finalists, Li Fabin lifted 137kg in his first snatch and easily achieved this level. In his second snatch, Li Fabin raised the weight to 141kg. If he succeeded at this level, he would break the Asian Games record (140kg). Li Fabin did not disappoint his fans when he successfully lifted this weight and broke the Games record.
In the third snatch, Li Fabin lifted the weight to 143kg and he also succeeded at this weight. Thus, he broke the Games record twice. However, according to the competition rules, he was only recognized as breaking the record once in the highest weight class of 143kg. Li Fabin led in the snatch.
Li Fabin's excellence has pushed the chances of the two Vietnamese weightlifters competing for medals further. At the end of the snatch event, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan ranked 4th in the snatch event with 132kg, Trinh Van Vinh ranked 5th with 128kg.
Entering the clean and jerk event, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan succeeded at 137kg. Saputra Ricko (Indonesia) was the next competitor with 160kg. In the second clean and jerk, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan raised the weight to 161kg and was unsuccessful at this weight. In the third clean and jerk, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan raised the weight to 162kg and was successful at this weight.
The clean and jerk is Trinh Van Vinh's forte and in the first push he succeeded at 164kg. Immediately after that, the North Korean weightlifter Pak Myongjin succeeded at 166kg. In this event, Li Fabin started the first push with 167kg and successfully broke the total weight record of the Games. Kim Chungguk (North Korea) succeeded at 168kg. Trinh Van Vinh decided to push up to 170kg in the last 2 pushes. Unfortunately, he was not successful in both pushes and had to close the Asian Games not as expected with a total weight of 292kg, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan was 294kg.
As expected, with his outstanding performance, Li Fabin won the gold medal with a total weight of 310 kg. North Korean athlete Pak Myongjin won the silver medal with a total weight of 307 kg. Kim Chungguk won the bronze medal with a total weight of 298 kg.
