On the afternoon of December 21, in Phung Nguyen commune (Lam Thao district, Phu Tho province), the Ministry of Transport (MOT) held a ceremony to launch the construction of the new Phong Chau bridge.
Minister of Transport Tran Hong Minh, Lieutenant General Nguyen Trong Binh - Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, Chairman of Phu Tho Provincial People's Committee Bui Van Quang and leaders of provincial departments, branches and sectors attended the event.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Transport Tran Hong Minh said that the collapse of Phong Chau bridge due to the impact of storm Yagi caused huge losses in human lives and property, disrupting traffic on National Highway 32C.
The urgent task of overcoming the consequences and speeding up the investment and construction of Phong Chau Bridge is of great significance. Therefore, General Secretary To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh have resolutely directed and requested the completion of the construction of the new Phong Chau Bridge according to the urgent construction order, and put the project into operation in 2025.
On the contractor side, the Minister requested Truong Son Construction Corporation to demonstrate the highest sense of responsibility, mobilize sufficient human resources, financial resources, and equipment to implement the construction, strive to shorten the project completion schedule, ensure quality, and soon connect the regional traffic network, creating the most favorable conditions for people to travel.
The Minister of Transport also requested Phu Tho province and related units to closely coordinate with the Thang Long Project Management Board, continue to create favorable conditions, promptly remove difficulties and obstacles, and ensure security and order so that investors and contractors can ensure progress and efficiency.
According to the plan, the new Phong Chau bridge is expected to be completed on December 31, 2025. However, Minister Tran Hong Minh requested relevant units to strive to complete it on December 22, 2025.
Also at the ceremony, the representative of the investor, Thang Long Project Management Board, Ministry of Transport said that the urgent implementation of the construction of the new bridge aims to promptly handle the collapse of the old Phong Chau bridge on National Highway 32C, resolve traffic disruptions, overcome the consequences of storms and floods, and soon connect the traffic network in the area.
People are facilitated to travel across both banks of the river connecting Tam Nong district with Lam Thao district, developing socio-economy, ensuring national defense and security in the area.
According to the design, the project has a starting point at Km00 (about Km 21+50, National Highway 32C avoiding Viet Tri City), in Phung Nguyen Commune (Lam Thao District) and an ending point at Km 0+625 (about Km 18+55), in Van Xuan Commune (Tam Nong District).
The new Phong Chau Bridge has a total length of nearly 653m, ensuring 4 lanes for motor vehicles. The bridge was constructed using reinforced concrete beams and prestressed reinforced concrete.
The main bridge consists of 3 continuous girder spans, balanced cantilever, reinforced concrete abutments and piers, and bored pile foundation. The road connecting the two ends of the bridge ensures the scale of a level III plain road, with a design speed of 80km/h.
