Đột phá AI: Việt Nam đã sẵn sàng cho làn sóng công nghệ mới?
By 2030, Vietnam aims to have at least 5,000 engineers with deep expertise in AI to serve the semiconductor industry.

How can Vietnam harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to boost economic growth and achieve its goal of becoming a high-income country by 2045?

This was the main content discussed enthusiastically by speakers at the Workshop "Creating the AI Future for Vietnam" organized by the National Innovation Center (NIC), the Ministry of Planning and Investment in collaboration with Google, on November 15.

Progress comes from human resources

At the event, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Do Thanh Trung emphasized the importance of AI in the socio-economic development strategy. In addition, he said that the Ministry has consulted and submitted to the Prime Minister for approval the Program "Developing human resources for the semiconductor industry to 2030, with a vision to 2050" (Decision No. 1017/QD-TTg). Specifically, the Program aims that by 2030, Vietnam will have at least 5,000 engineers with in-depth expertise in AI to serve the semiconductor industry.

Accordingly, the National Innovation Center is assigned to coordinate with domestic and foreign partners to build an AI Training, Research and Application Center. At the same time, this Center will support AI business incubation, research, application and in-depth training on AI with the goal of training 7,000 experts to international standards and incubating 500 startups by 2030.

On that basis, Deputy Minister Do Thanh Trung said that the Ministry of Planning and Investment is committed to supporting and accompanying the domestic AI community and continuing to advise on mechanisms and policies to develop technology, making Vietnam a leading AI research and application center in the region and the world.

Huge economic potential

At the conference, a Google representative announced the Economic Impact Report: “Driving Digital Growth in Vietnam with Google.” The report pointed out the huge potential of AI in Vietnam and estimated the economic benefits to be up to VND1,890 trillion (US$79.3 billion) for businesses by 2030, equivalent to 12% of GDP.

To fully exploit this potential, the team of experts who conducted the report recommended that Vietnam strengthen its technical infrastructure, train an AI-ready workforce, and increase access to AI across the economy.

The report also suggests strategies to close the digital and AI knowledge gap, helping the workforce make effective use of AI in their work. In addition, the report recommends that Vietnam adopt effective policies to retain and develop the country’s talent pool, such as expanding access to digital education and promoting corporate training programs. According to the report, closing the digital skills gap is expected to contribute an additional VND658.6 trillion to GDP by 2030.

In addition, Google's representative also affirmed its role in supporting businesses, households and the workforce in Vietnam through AI-integrated products and services such as Google Search, Google Ads, Google Play, YouTube, Google Cloud and Google Workspace.

Google’s report also highlights Vietnam’s impressive economic growth, from a low-income to middle-income country and its goal of becoming a high-income country by 2045. To realize this goal, AI is identified as a new growth driver, especially in the context of a rapidly developing digital economy. In addition, AI has the potential to boost sectors such as e-commerce and logistics.

Mr. Andrew Ure, Senior Director of Government Relations and Public Policy at Google Southeast Asia, shared that Vietnam has a great advantage in developing AI thanks to its young population, love of technology and dynamic digital environment.

Vietnamese businesses are actively applying AI, especially in the financial sector. The government has had strong support policies through the National AI Strategy, aiming to turn Vietnam into an AI innovation hub by 2030. Therefore, AI is expected to benefit many economic sectors of the country, of which the retail, healthcare, manufacturing, consumption and infrastructure sectors will benefit the most.

“We are excited to partner with NIC in Vietnam and look forward to working with the Government, ministries, agencies and research organisations to build an AI-based future that benefits everyone,” said Mr. Andrew Ure.
