Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum Nguyen Anh Minh was initially very hesitant about the proposal to put national treasure paintings and statues on ao dai and scarves. 'Who would dare wear statues of the Goddess of Mercy or Queen Trinh Thi Ngoc Truc on ao dai?'
Good What would happen if the paintings of Uncle Ho in the Viet Bac resistance base by artist Duong Bich Lien, Party admission in Dien Bien Phu by Nguyen Sang, Saint Giong by Nguyen Tu Nghiem... were printed on the ao dai?
Mr. Nguyen Anh Minh thought so, but was immediately reassured by the young Swiss designer of Vietnamese origin Minh Pham that he would not use those paintings and statues in his designs simply and passively, as people often do.
Inspired only by national treasures
The designer only distilled the artistic essence of these national treasure paintings and statues, from color to motifs and layout, and continued to create floral designs to put on the ao dai.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Minh has participated in the silk collection project Awakening the quintessence, extending the heritage.
The designer combines traditional art and modern fashion, transforming heritage masterpieces into contemporary works, while still preserving the spiritual value of tradition.
When viewing the collection, if not introduced, viewers on stage would find it difficult to recognize that the patterns on the ao dai are from national treasures that are quite familiar to everyone.
Bringing heritage closer
The silk collection Awakening the quintessence, extending the heritage was designed by Minh Pham from the inspiration of 9 national treasures of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum.
These are the statue of Bodhisattva Guanyin at Hoi Ha Pagoda, Vinh Phuc Province; the set of dragon-carved doors (Keo Pagoda); the statue of Queen Trinh Thi Ngoc Truc at Mat Pagoda;
The painting of Em Thuy by artist Tran Van Can; the painting of Uncle Ho in the Viet Bac resistance base by artist Duong Bich Lien;
Screen by painter Nguyen Gia Tri; painting of Giong by painter Nguyen Tu Nghiem; painting of Party Admission in Dien Bien Phu by painter Nguyen Sang; painting of Two Young Women and a Baby by To Ngoc Van.
"Combining national treasures with silk brings new value, bringing heritage closer to the public. That is also an important goal set by the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts," said Mr. Nguyen Anh Minh.
