Tran Thanh: 'I love and respect women'

Continuing to exploit the theme of women on the big screen, director Tran Thanh said he put a lot of thought and emotion into his project.

Mai is the third film directed by Tran Thanh, after two previous successful works, Bo Gia (2021) and Nha Ba Nu (2023). Last year, Nha Ba Nu broke the Vietnamese box office when it set a record of 475 billion VND in revenue to become the highest-grossing film in the history of Vietnamese cinema.

3 years with 2 impressive movies every Tet holiday, the return of director Tran Thanh with the project Mai in Tet 2024 makes the audience look forward to it.

If Mrs. Nu's House revolves around the touching story of women in the same family, in the new film, Tran Thanh chooses to focus on the life of a woman with a special fate named Mai .

Tran Thanh devotes a lot of effort to his third film project.

Devoting much thought to exploiting the topic of women on the big screen, Tran Thanh shared: “I love and respect women. They have many hidden corners and untold stories. I want to do something for everyone to watch and feel, together sympathize and respect women more.

"Mrs. Nu's House" and "Mai" are two different worlds in terms of art, story, and the inner thoughts of each character. In "Mrs. Nu's House", we see women who are hurt but hurt others, while in "Mai", although they are still hurt, the way women face and choose is completely different.

During the production of the new project, Tran Thanh also had many changes compared to previous film projects. "Before, I couldn't keep calm, because it was the first time I had to direct, watch the camera angle and also act my role.

Coming to this project, I entered the project with the best mentality, my working style was also more gentle and comfortable. The film brought me a lot of positive energy, from capturing beautiful images, having creative camera angles, and the actors also playing their roles very well. Perhaps these are the things that everyone who makes films wants," he said.

Immediately after completing Bo Gia, Tran Thanh started preparing the script for the project Mai . This is also the project that Tran Thanh has devoted the most effort and passion to up to this point.

From the script to the heavy investment in techniques, machinery, exploitation and restoration of special settings, he hopes the film will meet the audience's expectations of precision and quality.

After 3 years of "eating and sleeping" with the project, 47 days of filming and meticulous post-production, director Tran Thanh could not hide his excitement as he prepared to introduce his new work to the audience.

Phuong Anh Dao plays the female lead of the film.

Phuong Anh Dao was entrusted by Tran Thanh to take on the female lead role. She is currently a name that has proven her acting ability and received high praise from experts through a series of works she has participated in. The first collaboration between Tran Thanh - a director with 2 films that guaranteed revenue and Phuong Anh Dao - the "muse" of Vietnamese cinema has created even more curiosity for the audience.
