Toyota and Mazda temporarily stop production of 5 car models

07/06/2024

Toyota Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. announced on June 6 that they had suspended production of a total of five vehicle models after they were found to have cheated on vehicle quality inspections and conducted tests that did not comply with government-mandated specifications.

The move comes after Japan's transport ministry ordered a halt to production of Toyota's Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio and Yaris Cross models, along with Mazda's Mazda Roadster RF and Mazda2.

Toyota said the production halt will last at least until the end of this month, while Mazda remains uncertain about when its factories will resume operations.

The total annual production of the three affected Toyota models is about 130,000 units, while the two suspended Mazda models have a total production of about 15,000 units.

Earlier this week, both companies, along with Honda Motor Co., Suzuki Motor Corp. and motorcycle maker Yamaha Motor Co., admitted to cheating on vehicle tests to gain mass production certification, raising doubts about the reliability of their products.

The Japanese transport ministry visited Suzuki's headquarters in Shizuoka Prefecture on June 6 to determine whether to order a recall. Suzuki is the third company to be inspected by the transport ministry, following Toyota and Yamaha Motor.

The Ministry of Transport is expected to inspect the remaining two companies soon.
