The Alphabet chief highlighted that the start of this journey is the artificial intelligence (AI) dashboard, a significant change in how Google provides information to billions of users. “As AI expands the range of queries people can ask, 2025 will be one of the most important years for innovation in search,” Pichai said.
Pichai also mentioned the next phase of Google's plan, in which AI functions developed by DeepMind will be integrated into the search engine. Specifically, Google's search engine will gradually become an AI assistant, capable of browsing the web, analyzing information and providing general answers, instead of simply generating response links to queries.
This isn't the first time Google has taken this approach, especially after the company was surprised by the arrival of ChatGPT from OpenAI in late 2022. The upcoming changes to Google's search engine are expected to have a major impact on websites that rely on Google traffic as well as companies that advertise on the platform.
Google's Ambitious Project Astra
When asked about the future of AI and search, Pichai mentioned Project Astra — a multimodal AI system that DeepMind is developing that can process online video and answer questions about the content on the screen. Google has big plans for Project Astra, including turning it into a platform for augmented reality (AR) glasses.
Pichai also mentioned AI Gemini Deep Research, a tool that can conduct detailed research and analyze information from multiple sources in just minutes. He believes that this solution will automate many of the processes that users typically perform on search engines.
“We’re expanding the use cases of Search by allowing users to ask questions that may not be answered immediately, but will be answered over time,” Pichai said, adding that users will see new improvements throughout 2025.
Finally, Pichai emphasized that Google has a “clear vision” for search capabilities and is expanding them with the help of another AI agent called Project Mariner, which interacts with web interfaces on behalf of users, eliminating the need for them to interact directly with websites. Pichai suggested that Google Search’s interface could become more chatbot-like in the future, although he didn’t go into specifics.
