The International Criminal Court (ICC), the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU) and the UK have all objected to US President Donald Trump's latest move against the ICC.

On February 6, President Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions on the ICC, citing the agency’s targeting of the United States and its allies, including Israel. The order accused the ICC of “abusing its authority” and engaging in “unfounded” actions targeting the United States and its close allies in the Middle East.

Under the order, the White House has decided to freeze the assets and ban the entry of ICC officials, employees and their family members, along with anyone who is believed to have assisted the court's investigations.

In response to the above move, on February 7, the ICC issued a statement criticizing the US decision as damaging the independent and objective judicial work of this international body. The ICC affirmed that it will continue to bring justice and hope to millions of innocent victims around the world.

The Court also called on member states, civil society and the international community to stand together for justice and fundamental human rights.

On the UN side, the announcement of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights affirmed full support for the independent operations of the ICC, in all situations under the court's jurisdiction.

In the announcement, spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Ravina Shamdasani said that the ICC is an essential part of the global human rights system, "the foundation for ensuring justice and achieving accountability for the most serious crimes".

Commenting on the US move, Ms. Shamdasani emphasized: "We deeply regret the individual sanctions announced against ICC staff and call for this measure to be rescinded."

The judiciary must be able to fully exercise its independence, she said. The rule of law remains essential to shared peace and security. Seeking global accountability will make the world a safer place for everyone.

On the same day, February 7, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen defended the ICC, saying that the court must be allowed to continue its fight against international crimes and be the voice of victims around the world. She affirmed that Europe will always support justice and respect for international law.

The Council of Europe also criticized the US President's sanctions, saying that this would threaten the independence of the ICC and weaken the international criminal justice system.

Meanwhile, European Council President Antonio Costa met with ICC President Judge Tomoko Akane on 6 February to assure her of the EU's support for the ICC.

On February 7, the UK also affirmed that it "supports the independence of the ICC and has no plans to sanction officials of this court".
