In an interview aired on February 10, Mr. Sharaa said that anyone who has recently visited the Syrian capital, Damascus, agrees that sanctions should be lifted. He pointed to the security problems facing Syria and stressed that one of the solutions to the current situation is economic development.

"Without economic growth, there will be no stability. And without stability, we risk creating an environment that fosters chaos and instability. All these issues are interconnected and must be addressed together," the Syrian interim president was quoted as saying by Anadolu news agency.

Mr. al-Sharaa also expressed optimism about US President Donald Trump's Middle East policy, saying that the head of the White House is interested in regional peace and can play an important role in promoting global stability, especially if he ends the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Speaking about Mr Trump's proposed plan to "own" the Gaza Strip and relocate Palestinians to other countries in the region, Mr al-Sharaa firmly rejected the idea, asserting that no force can drive people from their land.

According to the Syrian interim president, many countries have tried to do that "but failed, especially in the recent war in Gaza", and commented: "It would not be wise, morally or politically correct for Mr. Trump to lead an effort to force the Palestinians to leave their country".

President Trump's Gaza plan has been widely criticized in the Arab world and elsewhere, with some arguing that the proposal amounts to “ethnic cleansing.”
