(CLO) President Joe Biden is said to have expressed regret for withdrawing from this year's US election, and said he could have defeated Donald Trump if he had not been eliminated from the race by his own party.
In recent days, Mr. Biden and some aides had told confidants that he could have continued the race and won a second term. However, under pressure from the Democratic Party elite, Mr. Biden decided to withdraw in July.
As a result, Vice President Kamala Harris led the Democratic Party's candidate list and replaced Mr. Biden, only to lose to Mr. Trump, who will be sworn in for a second term on January 20.
While Biden did not blame Harris or her campaign, he acknowledged that his withdrawal may have contributed to the Democratic Party’s loss. In September, Biden also expressed confidence that he could have beaten Trump if he had run again.

Some Democrats have suggested that Ms. Harris’s defeat may have been the result of Mr. Biden not dropping out of the race sooner. Senator Richard Blumenthal noted that Mr. Biden ran on the promise of being a transitional president and that his tenure would be a stepping stone for a new generation of leaders. But when Mr. Biden ran for reelection, he shattered those expectations.
Some of Mr Biden’s close advisers acknowledge that his leadership style, which focuses on stability and the long term, is not always suited to the pace of modern politics.
Mr. Biden also acknowledged some mistakes during his tenure, including not including his name on the pandemic relief checks his administration sent out in 2021, something Mr. Trump did as president in 2020. Mr. Biden and his aides also acknowledged the administration could have done better in lifting Americans’ spirits during the pandemic.
In addition, Mr. Biden also shared with confidants that he should not choose Merrick Garland as Attorney General, thinking that this former Court of Appeals judge was too harsh in prosecuting his son, Hunter Biden.
