Mr. Phan Van Kinh (82 years old), living in Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province, is one of those who always has good memories of the General Secretary from his student days, to his farewell to the battlefield and then his retirement. Although living in the coastal city of Nha Trang, each person has a different job, but the times he met the General Secretary always left him with beautiful, intimate images like his student days.
In the house on Hoa Lu Street, Mr. Phan Van Kinh still keeps 3 photos of the General Secretary's meetings with his family and friends. He treasures these photos and hangs them next to the family's bookshelf. The house is also where General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited, talked and confided in his university friend.
When he heard the news of the General Secretary's passing, Mr. Phan Van Kinh could not hide his sadness. “Initially, the Literature class had more than 40 people, then more brothers from Russia returned to the country and joined our class, the total number of students was over 50. In the early days, we studied in Me Tri, but then due to the war situation, the school evacuated to Van Tho commune, Dai Tu district, Thai Nguyen province. By the end of the second year, the class was divided into four groups: the Vietnamese Literature group; the Chinese Literature group and I went to the French Literature group while Mr. Trong went to the Russian Literature group. By chance, my place was about 50m away from Mr. Trong's place and the French and Russian Literature groups had many things in common, so we often discussed issues about literature and Western literary theory,” Mr. Phan Van Kinh recalled.

In his third year of study, Mr. Phan Van Kinh volunteered to go to the southern battlefield as a war correspondent. The night before he left, comrade Nguyen Phu Trong came over to sit and chat with him until late at night.
“The next morning, when we were carrying our backpacks, Mr. Trong appeared. We hugged and waved goodbye. Mr. Trong’s tears flowed, tears of parting. Everyone understood that it would be difficult to meet again on the battlefield, under fierce bombs and bullets,” said Mr. Phan Van Kinh.
After the liberation day, Mr. Phan Van Kinh had the opportunity to return to Hanoi and visit General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. The old friends met again, both hugged each other and cried with joy on the day of reunion.
Although each person's working conditions and workplaces are different, every time they have the opportunity to go to Hanoi or General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has the opportunity to go to Nha Trang, the two people meet and chat happily.
“During my time studying with Mr. Trong, I realized that he had a knack for politics, passionately studying Marxism-Leninism, and grasping everything the teacher taught in class. At that time in Hanoi, there were many libraries, and I saw Mr. Trong reading books every day. We all clearly saw the character, morality, and revolutionary qualities of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, but to me, comrade Nguyen Phu Trong was also a very modest, simple leader who respected teachers, loved friends, and was very affectionate,” Mr. Phan Van Kinh proudly said about his friend.
Although he takes on many important responsibilities and is always very busy with the work of the Party and the country, the General Secretary always remembers his old friends and always cares for and cherishes them with the most special and affectionate feelings.
