'I'm an intern, a probationary employee, not a servant to be ordered around?'

'I'm not a servant, I'm constantly asked to get or buy a cup of coffee or a bowl of noodles for someone. Some people ask me to buy something and then don't pay,' a young person shared.

Many debates arose when interns argued that they should enjoy full benefits and salaries, while businesses had a different perspective. Photo of students visiting technology models at the Ho Chi Minh City Student Innovation Day - Photo: TRIEU VAN

Salary and benefits for new employees are becoming a hot topic at some major domestic online job forums in the first days of the year.

Internship and probation also need salary to live

Most of the articles expressed dissatisfaction when they - interns, recent graduates and new employees - were not paid salaries or given clear benefits by businesses and units.

Thu Trang (22 years old, living in Dong Nai) told Tuoi Tre Online about her sadness. Trang just graduated with a degree in finance, was introduced by an acquaintance and started working as a probationary employee in July 2024 at a small bank branch.

According to Article 28 of the 2012 Labor Code, the salary during the probationary period is agreed upon by the employee and the enterprise. However, it must be at least 85% of the official salary of that position. If the enterprise does not comply with the regulations, it will be fined 2 - 5 million VND.

And according to Article 104 of the 2012 Labor Code, a newbie's working hours are no more than 8 hours/day, 48 hours/week. The amount of money that a business can be fined if it requires a newbie to work more than the prescribed hours is around 20 - 25 million VND.

It was called a probationary period, but Trang had to do almost all the work like an official employee, from hours, procedures, and duties. Trang said that even if she was late, she was still reminded, although she only received a symbolic salary of 30% of her official salary.

"On busy days, I have to work overtime like everyone else. During Tet, everyone gets a bonus of several months' salary, but I get a lucky money of 500,000 VND. My salary is not enough to buy gas or buy lunch," Trang said.

Having just graduated and started working at a company headquartered in District 3, Quoc Trung (23 years old) confided that in addition to not enjoying basic benefits in terms of salary and benefits, he was also upset when everyone saw him as an errand boy.

"I understand that new people should try a little harder and give in to others a little. But I'm not a servant, always asking people to get or buy me a cup of coffee or a bowl of noodles. Some people ask me to buy something and then don't pay," Trung shared.

Interns at public and state agencies also add to the sadness of young people. On a job forum, the "chorus" described by interns about this journey is even more tragic when not only do they not receive a salary but also have to spend money to buy gifts, host parties, and become a real servant serving water and making tea...

Incompetent, inexperienced then don't ask?

The confessions of interns and new employees received great sympathy. However, there were also many negative reactions.

Facebook account Hoang Hung stated his opinion: a valuable employee is an employee who is able to bring benefits to the company. The value of an employee is shown and measured through two factors: ability and experience.

"Even with a good degree, a new person's working ability is still weak. If you haven't worked yet, where will you get experience? Therefore, don't ask for too much," this account commented.

Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Duc Hoa - owner of a media company in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City - said that paying salary is necessary to motivate new employees and interns. However, many times he was "surprised and bewildered" by the demands for salary and benefits that they put forth.

He also evaluated the working attitude as "enthusiastic when happy, indifferent when sad", "asking for leave every three days due to family matters"...

"I don't know where you guys base your request for a salary of 15-20 million VND/month, while I just graduated and my CV doesn't have anything outstanding," said Mr. Hoa.

The owner of a business with more than 100 employees in Ho Chi Minh City shares the view that "when you do not create value, you are a cost". If you have no experience and are still inexperienced, you should not ask for too much, according to this person.

"At that time, you are the company's expense. So you should know and try to take advantage of the early time to learn and accumulate experience instead of demanding too many benefits beyond your own capacity," he said.
