Sharing with Giao Thong Newspaper, he revealed many hidden corners of his private life and decided to restart his career at the age of nearly 50.
Make art to save yourself
Thai San joins hands with singer Phuong Thanh when returning to the music scene
You returned to the arts with the MV "I wanna be in you" - in collaboration with Phuong Thanh, why is it rock and not another "lighter" music genre?
I love rock music and want to sing rock to release the hidden, frustrated feelings that have been inside me for decades. Perhaps the screaming and burning of rock is enough to convey the energy in me. Before, I turned to rock as a way to heal, when I fell into a deadlock, had to leave art to go to France alone to take care of my sick mother, study, and earn a living.
Phuong Thanh and I will collaborate on 3 songs, all of which are rock. I will do the first song lightly, the next 2 songs will be more intense and will end with a live show.
When you played the love role with Phuong Thanh, how did you feel?
I am sentimental and emotional. I cherish and love talented people. The more talented they are, the more I like them. Phuong Thanh and I are both single. But Phuong Thanh warned me in advance that she did not want a relationship. The relationship between Phuong Thanh and I is currently a pure colleague relationship.
But Phuong Thanh and I are very compatible in terms of art, we both love strong rock music, we are passionate about art, and we do everything thoroughly.
Why did the one-time "screen prince" choose to reappear as a singer Thai San instead of an actor Thai San?
I started out as a singer, not a movie actor. Few people know that before becoming an actor, I was a singer who sang at many venues in Da Lat. Singing was my main source of income at that time. When I moved to Saigon, I still sang at 5-6 music venues every night, throughout the early 90s.
In 1994, when I starred in the movie “Sao em voi la chong” (directed by Tran Canh Don) with Viet Trinh, my name became more widely known. I was attracted to the commercial film genre at that time, and my singing career was put on hold until now.
In 1998, I left my career to go to France to take care of my seriously ill mother, when my artistic blood was still strong in me, and over the years it had accumulated into hidden feelings. This time, returning to Vietnam, I do art to save myself. Of course, if there is an invitation to act in a movie with a suitable role, at the right time, I am still ready to participate.
Don't be afraid to start over
Thai San at the age of U50
Starting over at the age of nearly 50, do you think you will be as successful as you were in your prime?
Let's forget about the old Thai San. Only that generation knew about Thai San in the 90s, that was a definite strength. But how many young people today know who Thai San is?! Let's start all over from zero.
I don’t want to rely on the title of “screen prince” or a famous actor of some time. That’s old! What is in the past, consider it a memory. Now, I want to be a Thai San singer, conquering young audiences with quality products, with a completely new image, new values. At the age of U50, I still feel full of energy!
While artists of the same generation like Ly Hung, Viet Trinh... are gradually retreating, even leaving showbiz, Thai San is ready to renew himself to conquer audiences of the younger generation... Do you think this is a risky decision?
My comeback was done seriously, with investment, not a walk in the park. To come back, I researched the market, young audience tastes, trends, learned in all fields, and had the support of a team of experts.
I feel more confident because after many years of trying, I have my own house and a travel company in France. My material life is full, I can do many things I want. Of course, I do everything with careful calculation and do not throw money out the window.
Want to fulfill filial piety
Thai San used to play the roles of students, gallant and kind rich young masters in popular social-emotional films.
Do you have any regrets when you think about the past 20 years?
I have no regrets! If I had to choose again, I would still choose to take care of my mother. If time could be turned back, I would still choose to take care of my mother. Being an artist can give me money, fame and passion, but what is the meaning of all that if I don't fulfill my filial duty?
I felt that my mother needed me to be there to take care of her health. I loved her and did not want to be away from her. That was the reason why I stayed in France until she passed away.
There is no cure for my mother's illness, only love can compensate for it. In the summer of 2008, I brought my mother back to Vietnam after decades of being away from her homeland.
During the last six months before my mother passed away, I went to the hospital every day to take care of her and massage her. Perhaps because she was with her son, my mother passed away very peacefully. Now I don't hate my father, sometimes when I go back to Vietnam, I still visit him, that is the duty of a son.
How was your life in France?
I founded a travel company, both managing and leading tours. My advantage is that I have connections with Vietnam, and can bring French tourists to my homeland and vice versa.
When I was leading the tour, some people recognized me as actress Thai San. At first, I was embarrassed and denied it. Only later did I dare to admit it because I understood that whoever I am, I can do anything, as long as the job is honest and brings joy and income to myself.
Honestly, I am very busy, working day in and day out. Besides taking care of my mother, I also bury myself in earning money and studying. In addition to my master's degree in tourism, I also have degrees in economics and marketing.
I think I can multitask because I feel lonely. After more than 20 years in France, I got used to gnawing at loneliness. There were nights when I went to bars alone to drink and wandered the streets of Paris, feeling that life was meaningless.
I remember one time, someone put their hand on my shoulder. Just like that, I shuddered to realize how much I craved love, care, comfort.
I also got to know a few people, but when they wanted to get involved, I withdrew because I was busy with my career, afraid of marriage, and afraid of hurting them because of the trauma of my broken family.
But then Thai San still have to love?
I still love. But marriage is a big deal. Now, I crave a wife and children, a home of my own. I always dream that one day, I will marry a beautiful, gentle girl and give me children. I believe that I will love my future wife as I loved my mother.
Thank you!
