This means that the displays on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air (the thin iPhone model expected to replace the iPhone 17 Plus) will be able to increase the refresh rate up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and better video viewing when needed.

ProMotion will also allow the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air displays to drop to a more power-efficient refresh rate.

iPhone 13 Pro models can drop to 10Hz, while iPhone 14 Pro through iPhone 16 Pro models can drop to 1Hz, allowing for an Always-On Display with information on the lock screen even when the device is locked.

However, it is unclear whether the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will drop to 10Hz or 1Hz.

For comparison, the newly launched iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models still use screens with a refresh rate of 60Hz. Meanwhile, the ProMotion screen is only for the "Pro" models.

Ross Young is known as a highly accurate source when it comes to providing information about the screens of Apple's new products.

Before the iPhone 16 series was released, Young was the first to reveal that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max would have larger screens, 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches respectively.

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 series in September next year.
